I see Massad Ayoob has a new book coming - apparently not out yet, but available for pre-order from various vendors.

Title is Deadly Force - Understanding Your Right To Self Defense, and from the blurbs I'm reading, it's a long overdue update of his 1980's era In The Gravest Extreme.

I've had his original book since it was published (along with a lot of his other work), and I'm looking forward to the new book.

For those new shooters and those interested in self-defense, I'd highly recommend you get one - you also might want to get one for family / friends that are not familiar with the legal traps that await them if they don't do their research!

I have my copy of Gravest Extreme and it's been well read over the years,,,as a young officer I met Massad Ayoob at a gun show in Concord NH and was invited back to his home for coffee and to peruse his library .......

Mas is one of the few writer/instructors I am willing to spend money on.
Yup - I have yet to be disappointed in any of his work.

I already had a number of his books - as such, I hesitated on buying The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery as I didn't think it would be up my alley - as usual, I got much more than the cover suggested.

My cable provider didn't carry Personal Defense TV, and my brother kept telling me about some of the excellent regular segments they had with Ayoob.
I ended up buying the first few seasons when they were finally available on DVD - it's a shame he doesn't put out his own DVD full of stuff like he had on Personal Defense TV.

I thought Personal Defense TV went downhill quite a bit when both Tom Gresham and Ayoob left the series.

I placed my order some time back and intended to discuss it after it arrived.

I don't know whether it should really be characterized as an update to In the Gravest Extreme, though some material from that book may be carried over.

I'm expecting to see some stuff from MAG-20.

We'll see.

Nor did I - I was guessing it might be, but then I read this blurb on Personal Security Institute's site (referencing In The Gravest Extreme):

Massad Ayoob has finally agreed to write a new version, and the title has changed to better reflect the subject matter and the major changes in societal attitudes toward defensive shooting. Thus, the new version of In The Gravest Extreme will be titled "Deadly Force: Understanding Your Right to Self Defense."

Whether or not the writer of the above line knows more than we do at this point is anyone's guess.

The Gun Digest Store has more details on the book, including a list of chapters:
Contents:
Foreword

Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Standards
Chapter 3: The Ability Factor
Chapter 4: The Opportunity Factor
Chapter 5: The Jeopardy Factor

I have occasionally thought that In The Gravest Extreme was a great book that was in desperate need of an update, especially the sections about gun selection. I haven't read it in probably 15 years but I think there were only three autos in common use that were discussed: 1911, Hi Power and 1st generation S&W. The availability of other choices has certainly bloomed since the book was written. The dramatic rise in shall-issue CDW states and reciprocity issues probably also needs to be addressed.

It's been a long time since I've bought a firearm book, and I think Ayoob has gotten a little bloviative over the years, but I will happily plunk down the cash to buy this one. The original book was invaluable in helping me understand how the movie and gunshop version of self-defense with a firearm differs from the legal realities. I think the entire gun owning community owes Ayoob a debt of gratitude for publishing the first volume because it really broke meaningful ground.

Tepin, I just downloaded Mark Macyoung's new book onto the Kindle. Let's open a new thread on it---whoever finishes it first and gets the chance.

Thanks for the post.

Another many thanks for the update, order just placed. I met Mas at the Polite Society Match in Memphis in March 2013 at Rangemaster which has since closed, but is still alive on-line. He is as good in person as in writing. He offers a wealth of information to absorb.

Pre-order in. Thanks for the heads up. In the Gravest Extreme is a classic and I can't wait for the new book. May have to pull it out and give it a read.

Massad !

Will it be available on Amazon for Kindle ? I hope so..I buy about 10 books per months...all on the Kindle Fire. Look forward to reading it...

I just pre-ordered six copies from Amazon.com.

I've been reading Massad Ayoob since the late 1970s when he used to write for "Law & Order" magazine. I am a graduate of LFI-1 and LFI-2 and MAG 20 and several other LFI classes.

I bought "In the Gravest Extreme" when it first came out and have accumulated several other copies over the years & have re-read it many times.

Massad does an excellent job in discussing the legal issues of the use of force for the private citizen. I'm really looking forward to reading his new book.

I've read my old copy of Gravest Extreme a couple of times, time for a reread and the new one it seems.

....I have not yet seen a Kindle edition.
And while I'm a big fan of electronic readers (a bought Kindle years ago because I was drowning in books), a book like this is best kept in the old fashion form. It's easier to use for reference as a real book.
