I finally got around to reading Massad Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme" as recommended by many people. I loved the read; it gave a very good look into many of the non-shooting aspects of self defense with handguns and concealed carry subjects. The date of the book (1980), however, definitely shows. Though, regardless, there is still plenty of good information.

I am currently waiting for my library to send me "Stressfire, Vol. 1". But I have noted that it too is quite dated. I still plan to read it however, and gut the information that is still applicable today.

What other good gun literature exists out there for self defense and CCW subjects that is heavily recommended?

Minnesota Permit to Carry a Firearm Fundamentals ..... Although its based on MN law this book has a lot of valuable information for permit carriers everywhere. Im not sure how easy it is to get anymore but they do have it listed at Amazon.

"The Gift of Fear" by Gavin deBecker. It's about trusting your gut instincts and teaching you about the kinds of things that trigger them in the first place. Great read. The author does show an anti-gun mentality and seems to have a bit of an ego, but if you can get that, there is a ton of useful info in the book.

"On Killing" and "On Combat" by LTC Dave Grossman. Information, based on studies and interviews with combat vets, about what happens mentally and physiologically when people fight for their lives.

"The Combative Perspective" and "The Tactical Advantage" by Gabe Suarez. Info on mindset and tactics by an esteemed instructor who has been there and done that.

If you're enjoying Ayoob's work, check out "The Truth About Self Protection." It's also dated to the 1980s but most of the info still applies. He also wrote the recent editions of the Gun Digest Books of Concealed Carry and Combat Handgunnery.

Certain things are NEVER dated. The gun and ammo information changes a bit, but the principles and tactics stay the same. That being said, Mas Ayoob has a much newer book on the subject of concealed carry and defensive shooting.

An author named Conti has written a couple of books on police handgunning that is applicable to concealed carry and defensive shooting. One is aimed at police handgun instructors, and is quite expensive, while the other is less expensive, and is aimed at the individual officer. The latter is the one I have read, and is relevant for CC.

Jim Cirillo has a couple of books that are excellent.

Ed Lovette's book on the subject of the snubby revolver is excellent, and in it, he references another useful book.

Sorry about not being more specific. A recent change in living circumstances has many of my books either boxed-up at home, or in off-site storage.
