Indiana Lifetime Permit

Basically, be a resident and not a felon or adjudicated mentally deficient, fill out the form, get printed, pay the fee.

Your local police office (or sheriff if you don't have a municipality) can walk you through it. You may want to call ahead, they are usually very specific about how they get their money. If you are Marion County they are even more specific.

Because of relatively low cost there's really no reason not to get the lifetime permit.

I just recently received my lifetime permit. The woman at the police station who did the paperwork and printing said ISP was telling them in November processing was taking 8-10 weeks. That was accurate.

I was pretty surprised at how crude the permits are. I was licensed in Florida and their permits were similar to drivers licenses and could be used as a second form of picture ID.

It seems that the wait is getting shorter. Applied on 1/4/2008, new one issued on 2/8 and got it back today in the mail.

Hopefully, I will have mine soon, wife and I applied for the lifetime as well. I previously had the 4 year. Applied on Jan 25 by all accounts we should have them by the first or second week of March. I know they are still on the cheap-o 20# pink paper, I've laminated quite a few for people around here. I will be making a dozen or so copies of each, scan them into the computer as well. I'll have laminated cards in every conceivable location I might be in so I'm never "caught without one". No, I don't think there should even be a permit required on a constitutionally guaranteed right but I will follow the current law.

What are teh requirements to get a permit in IN

Indiana is a shall-issue state and has very limited requirements for a CCW license. I believe you apply to the chief law enforcement official in your area, pay a fee ($30 for 4 years unlimited, $75 for lifetime unlimited), a background check is done, and that's it. There are no training pre-requisites.

You must have a license for open carry too.

I don't think I'm thread hijacking here but...

If I were to move from Indiana, would the license still be valid?

Or is it only good if you are an Indiana resident?

Paulus...I've been wondering the same exact thing. I'm currently in college still and I've got a lifetime Indiana permit but have thought about the possibility of my job being out of state after graduation. If anyone knows the answer to what they do, I'd love to know.

And as far as renewing your 4-year license to a lifetime...you must wait until you're in the renewal period. A buddy of mine's dad got the 4-year, they released the lifetime so he decided to get it while he still could, went down, submitted everything again as a renewal, they took his money and all. He got a letter(may have been a call) about 6 weeks later saying his renewal had been rejected because he wasn't in his renewal period yet. Lost half of the money too...boy, he was ticked.
