So I got this type 56 AR for 300 good shape, bunch of ammo and a few mags. The question I'm wondering is, how good are these, and I think its a pre-ban cause its lacking the MAK stamp on it. Plus original Furniture. I know Russian, arsenal, Yugo, and Romanian AKs; not the Chinese ones, well not how to identify atleast.

Type 56's are Chinese AKMs, with stamped receivers. Yes, they were from before the '94-'04 Brady Ban. You got a good deal... they are worth quite a bit more than what you paid. Hang onto that one. You probably won't see too many more like it, and it will do nothing but go up in value. Should be fun to play with, too. Yeah, it's not an AR. Maybe you're new to the gun scene... "AR" refers to the AR-15 platform (it stands for "Armalite Rifle," but came to describe all rifles on that platform regardless of make). Yours is a variant of the AK design (Avtomat Kalashnikov).

Sorry I should've expanded on the AR I do know tha its fully called a type 56 assualt rifle (AR) even if it not a real full auto assualt rifle.

Face Palm.... Please do not refer to it as an "Assault rifle", AR does not stand for Assault rifle. I'm no gun snob, but if new gun owners keep refering to military style semi automatic rifles as assault rifles, then the Gun control activists will utilize this for their gain. I'm not trying to insult you, it would benefit the rest of the firearm community if the term "assault rifle" wasn't used.

The type 56 is Chinese and has a hooded front sight, which means that the front post is totally enclosed.. Depending on who you ask, they range from being great to terrible. But where did you get a $300 AK nowadays that isn't in 22lr?

I'm not going to argue, but every place I've researched it thus far has in fact called it a type 56 assualt rifle. I know the difference, and assualt rifle is something the Hughes amendment made stupidly expensive to get. And now the gun grabbers call assault rifles anything with a hi cap detachable mag, a pistol grip, and ability to have attachments . However I didn't know much about the type 56 when I started this thread

IMO Chinese AK's are the finest ever imported into this country. The Bakelite furniture on yours is very desirable and adds much to it's value. The dust cover looks alot lighter in the picture and might not be original or maybe it's just the way the light is on it. The value if it's in VG cond. is $1200+.

+ at least a million.

AR... As In ARmalite, the original. So, consider that free info. It's nothing to do with assault rifle.

You, hopefully, are not a gun grabber. You are a gun owner, and in order to stifle fuel being added to the fire, understand that just because Govt calls something an "assault" rifle doesn't mean that the terminology is even remotely correct. It wouldn't be the first time Govt has been wrong, won't be the last. So, I would be hesitant to follow suit with what politicians call a rifle unless your leaning left.

To be termed "Assault Rifle", the gun (any assault rifle) MUST have full auto capability.
What you have is a Type-84s, the name of the semi auto version of the Type-56 "AK", and it is correctly classifeyd as a "Sporting rifle"

Truely , the semi auto versions of the AK-47 and its variations are properly termed "Transvestites" in the gun world........You can call them "Assault Rifles", like you can call the lady at the bar 'Pretty" as they look the same on the outside, but lift the skirt a bit and youll see the parts that matter are mucho different......:barf: ~~LOL!!~~

I just clearly stated I'm against all gun bans/rules/legistlation/anything. I'm from I must say though you guys kinda jerks and know it all's. Who assume because I called something an assualt rifle I A: don't know guns. B: Believe what ever the government says. C: am a gun grabber. Sorry its a AK platform rifle that happens to have assualt in its full name. But you know what I got mine for, its not a hunting rifle, its not just a sporting rifle. Its for protection against whatever Im endangered by.

Honestly I expect better from the members of THR. Yes I know that terminology is important and that the term "assault rifle" has a defined meaning. But there is no need to jump all over the OP and his thread. We are here to educate and inform, not attack and beat people over the head.

OP, it looks like you got a good rifle for one heck of a deal. If you are happy with the rifle and what you paid for it then that is the only thing that matters.
