im looking for information on the Yugoslavian SKS rifle.
id like to know how acurate and reliable it is
how expensive the bullets are

id heard that the clip is non-deatachable, what exactly does that mean? does that mean it cant come off at all?

any info would be appreciated

The Yugo SKS is quite reliable, as long as it's in original condition. The one thing to watch for is to make sure the firing pin is not sticking in the bolt (due to built-up preservative grease, for example). A thorough cleaning will make sure that it's free enough to rattle when you shake the bolt.

As for accuracy, it's a medium-accurate rifle for short to medium range. Out to about 150 yards it should be accurate enough to do it's job, but it won't put all the bullets into the same hole even at closer ranges.

It shoots 7.62x39mm ammo, which is about the cheapest rifle ammunition available. You can find the ammo both new or surplus, often for about $.10/round. The magazine is hinged at the front, so it can swing open to empty, but it isn't designed to be removed from the rifle unless you're field-stripping it for cleaning. Some aftermarket, larger magazines are available. They're not recommended - they were designed for other SKS versions, not the Yugo, and don't feed reliably. Also, modifying the Yugo SKS to take them is illegal unless a lot of other changes are made (strange federal law involved here - search other threads for more details).

It's a fun rifle, and inexpensive. Get one!

If you're interested in buying one, mine's for sale and I live in FL. PM me for more info.

I've got a Yugo SKS and I love it. very comfortable to shoot, very reliable ( I've shot hundreds of rounds through mine without a stoppage).

SKS's don't have fixed clips :uhoh: I'm not sure how that would work. You put the clips up to the top of the rifle and feed the bullets into the magazine like you would with an SVT 40, mosin nagant etc.

so yes- I would trust my SKS to do the job every time. At the shooting range or in a firefight.

The wife has one, and loves it. I bought the unissued from J&G Sales, and it came to $161 shipped. Try buying a practically new semi auto centerfire rifle for that price. After hours of decosmo-ing, it has been trouble free, and accurate enough. I got very good groups with it at 100 yards, and wouldn't hesitate to defend my family with it. I also feel very comfortable with my wife defending the family with it!!

My local sporting goods chain {Dunhams} has the 59/66 Yugo SKS on sale for $139. You can probably find a similar price in your area.

10-round magazine, fed with 'stripper clips' or 'chargers' as they are sometimes called. Can also be single-loaded. Magazine can be opened/removed, but the after-market larger capacity mags do not work well with the Yugos.

I have seen 7.62x39 ammo on the shelf at several local stores for anywhere from $1.69/20 up to $2.99/20, so keep your eyes on the sales flyers/shelves. You can get better per-round prices buying in bulk from Ammoman, AIM, Southern Ohio Gun, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc. if you buy in lots of 500 or more.

Of the centre-fire long guns that I have, the SKS wins the "fun-gun plinker" division award.
