Installing & sighting in a LR tang sight

I have a Uberti 1885 High Wall that has the original buckhorn sight.
I'm just getting set to install a globe front & vernier tang sight & I was wondering if anyone here had a quick & reliable method for getting on paper.

As with a scope, would I start out at 25-50yds & simply work my way out, or should I measure height above bore center & work from there?

I'd like to be able to get some idea of sight settings for upto 500yds to start with. I'd like to end up with marks for 1000, but I don't have enough time behind the trigger to attempt shots that far yet. Currently 300 is about my limit before my accuracy goes all to hell!

I sight mine in just like a scope. I usually fire a shot or two at ten yards just to make sure I am going to be in the right ball park (you should be hitting an inch or slightly more low at 10 yards). Then sight in to point of impact at 25 yards. That should put you close at 100. From that point, keep moving back and record you settings.

Bore sight it.

1. Sandbag the rifle on a bench so it can't move.
2. Open the action and look through the barrel at a target 100 yards away.
3. Adjust the tang sight to where it is centered on the bullseye.
Done.

On the off chance you can't look through the bore?? (I can't remember if you can or not on a high-wall)

Adjust the tang sight to match up with the buckhorn sight picture before you take the buckhorn sight off.
Done.

Thanks RC & BHK, I didn't think about bore sighting!

I can't sight down the original sights as I'm changing them both, however boresighting seems like a simple solution.
