Good afternoon. A LGS has one of the above for $999. I’m in the market for a .375/.458 for under 1.5k. I’m not familiar with interarms. Is this a reputable manufacturer? Looks like a Mauser action.

Thanks,
Ben

They are known as a rugged dependable rifle with hunting grade accuracy. They are a version of the traditional Mauser action, but they can be a little rougher than some more expensive guns. You see lots of custom rifles built off the actions. For many years you could buy the actions alone and have a gunsmith build them to your specs for very reasonable prices. I picked up a custom in 338-06 and used it for a while. Liked the rifle, decided I didn't like 338-06 all that much. I also had one in 7mm RM years ago.

They were made in Yugoslavia and marketed under various names over the years. Remington imported them and sold them with the Remington name stamped on them briefly. I think they are now out of production. They were, but I keep hearing rumors that they are back. But I've not seen a new one since Remington stopped importing them. Here is a write up on the Remington version from 2010

For someone looking for a dependable rifle for something that bites back one would be near the top of my list. If I were looking to build a long range precision rifle I'd probably look elsewhere.

While I like them, $999 seems a little high even for a 458. I see them in standard calibers for under $300 quite often. But then again I could be wrong.

If it's a "Whitworth" MkX, it's a good deal (not great, though).
I always wanted one in .375 H&H.
They are good, accurate rifles. Barrels by Wilson, stocked in the US, as actions were the only imported part.

Not well known (good) if you are lucky enough to buy/own one. I have two, a .30/06 I killed my first deer with in 1976, and a .270 which I wanted, but never found until 2008. Have killed two deer with it. Many (nearly 100) with the '06...

an extremely nice diamond in the rough if it is a Whitworth safari model. The cross bolting is excellent , tuneable trigger , excellent safety , good wood hor a heavy rifle (usually) . With a little tuning and stout mounts they are near perfect for a heavy IMHO

It’s the real deal. Those guns have high quality actions made by a reputable company. I have a really nice 257 Weatherby I built from a bare action that is one of my best guns.

I’m surprised the price is that high. I obviously don’t know the dealer but you might find there is some significant negotiating room.

The Whitworth ones are so marked and you would see it, the .375 and .458 ones have steel cross bolts on sides of stock you can see and folding "leaf" sights

I have an Interarms Mark-X Whitworth .458 that I used for many years while in Alaska. The action was Yugoslavian made and is widely regarded as high quality. The Whitworth version is an upgrade to the standard Mark-X version and commands a somewhat higher price.

Well he came down on the price, and it was in good shape so i bought it. It’s not a whitworth, but it has leaf sites for 100,200, & 300 and a Cross bolt. . Bore was clean and the action was smooth and looks fairly sturdy. I’m pretty excited. Thanks for the input guys.

If it has a cross bolt and leaf sights you did good and that is a great rifle. Might need a good bedding job and trigger is very adjustable. The action will get smoother with use, if it is not all ready :)

I would put Talley or Warne Maxi bases on it. With Warne QD rings and a good Leupold or better scope 1-4x or 1.5-6 with heavy posts or wires. You can trade out the factory pad for a limb saver or Kick eze .

I really can't see any advantage to them over a Win70 or MRC clone. Unless the advantage is price, but you're talking right in line with a Winchester Alanskan in .375 and not much less than a Safari I think.

I certainly understand if you want the "real" Mauser just because though :D
