See this review of Buffalo Bore's new 180gr. hard-cast penetrators for the .357 Magnum. Tests showed over 1,500 fps from a 6" barrel revolver, and over 1,800 fps from a 16" barrel carbine. Given that it's a hard-cast load, penetration should be rather better than the Winchester 180gr. JHP load. For the first time, I think I've found a .357 load that I would use on whitetail or Louisiana hogs with a fair expectation of success...

1500 from 180's ...... now that sounds like a well useful load.. gas checked I would hope. Any pic of this bullet? is it a SWC?

My std load for .357 is still 158 gas checks running around 1450 ... and they are more than ''useful'' .... be interested hear more on this one. I imagine it would (should) be labelled as for ''modern firearms in good condition''.

Input ...... need more input!!:p

Also, the article concludes:
It should be born in mind that this ammunition is for modern guns in fine mechanical order, and handgun shooters should be prepared for a new class of .357 recoil.

yeah, but...how much??

my one experience w/ buffalo bore: went to the gunshop, and told proprietor that i needed some 480 ruger... he reaches back, and puts a box of buffalo on the counter, telling me: 'this is as good as it gets.' i say ok, i just need to burp some brass, anyway, so i can load... how much? $99.95, plus tax. when he sees my obvious shock, he quickly points out that there are 50 in this box, not like hornady where you only get 20...

Looks like I REALLY need a Timberwolf 357Maggie Rifle!! :D

This should take a whitetail without problems. Especially out of an 18" barrel...

Very interesting..

Hey Corbon: bring back your 200grain hard cast .357 load (which TEARS UP small frame .357's for the boobs that dare shoot them!) which does an honest 1250fps in a 6inch barrel and over 1300fps in a 8" barrel! Although these things go thru ANYTHING they don't open at all being as hard as Hillary's heart. Unlike 180 Partition Gold which opens to .5" AND still penetrates anything under 400pounds very adequately. Seriously , I've found hard cast flat points to be reliable killers and straight penetrators, they just aren't as FAST a killers as a modern well designed controlled expansion bullet(like Partition Gold) . Whereas a cast bullet rarely drops game instantly unless brained or spine cut, a simarlly placed good controlled expansion bullet usually piles them up in my observations.;)

Preacherman,

Hey! Redirected from my thread in revolvers.

Personally for my purposes I think the Buffalo Bore is unnecessary. I've found that the standard Federal 180 gr castcores seem to do a find job and have no problems penetrating hogs whether it be skull or anywhere else. On two different occasions last week I put said bullet right through hog skulls with no penetration issues. One was attempting to charge me at the time so I was head on and put it straight down the middle in line with the body so I'm not sure just how far through that one penetrated. The other was from behind as it was running off and I hit it high in the back of the head but still in brain area. That one actually went in one side and out the other and by looking at the wound appeared to have exited with no small force. I've looked at those buffalo bore cartridges before and they seem like overkill for my hog needs. I haven't hunted deer with my pistol yet but I'll probably look into a semi-jacketed soft point or sjhp.

I'd really like to find some decent hog ammo that is readily available at a local store but so far that's been  .

My dad is picking me up some Remington 180gr semi-jacketed hollow points from Bass Pro Shops this weekend. I'll let ya'll know how those do against hogs if I see any this weekend at our place. I'm gonna load 4 sjhp's followed by my only two remaining 180gr castcores just in case. I'm thinking penetration will be sufficient with the sjhp's though.

Anyone have any ballistic specs on the Remington 180gr sjhp's by any chance?

From Remington's Web site:

Velocity: Remington® Express™ 180 SJHP Muzzle - 1145, 50 yards - 1053, 100 yards - 985 fps.

Energy: Remington® Express™ 180 SJHP Muzzle - 524, 50 yards - 443, 100 yards 388 fpe.

Seems a bit wimpish, compared to the Buffalo Bore... :D

Thats warm!!!
I have some 180gr XTPs seated to the rear groove with a heavy charge of 2400. They fill the cylinders in my 7.5" redhawk, and they only do 1350. Maybe 296 or lil gun with a cast instead of jacketed would get me there, but I've always figured if I needed more than that it's time for the 41 or 44.

I'm still going to have to get some for comparison, though.
