Wow. I guess you won't be going back. I know I wouldn't. And I don't know if you can review a gun ship on Yelp, but I would.

Umm that guy sounds like he has a screw loose...I would avoid him. I have a few "no-go" shops in my area.. just look around till you find one where they treat you well and make them your go-to store.

I hear about so many brick and mortar gun shops that are complete dicks when it comes to FFL transfers.

Thank God for the smaller FFLs that operate out of their house or home office...

It's easy money for the FFL dealer. They are making $25 for 10 minutes of easy work? I know that some FFL dealers get mad because they'd prefer you just buy the gun directly from them. I always try and do that with my favorite local gun dealer, that is, I call him and say "can you get this, if yes, how much is it?" Sometimes he's says yes, sometimes he says no. He has decent pricing so after I pay tax, it's about the same as ordering the gun over the www and paying shipping and the transfer fee.

could be worse. my kitchen table FFL never shuts up. his prices are fine for the area, but it's a 2 hour sit and listen to him yammer on constantly about every damn conspiracy that's out there instead of filling out paperwork.

My LGS is great about transfers.

I have asked a few times if they'd order a gun in, but whenever I'd say who had it at what price, he would suggest I order it myself, and it always comes out cheaper.

I get a phone call when my gun comes in, and the paperwork is always waiting when I arrive.

During the course of my life I've come across my share of vendors and sellers who just don't seem to like their own businesses and the things they have to do to make money in their chosen endeavor. That suits me just fine, I just complete the sale or whatever (or turn and walk away in a few cases) and move on to a competitor. Many times I've found far better shops than the few that have been such a PITA.

I've been treated more ethically and courteously at some big-box firearms retailers than I have at certain smaller local gun shops.

I used to live in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, and did business at a couple pretty good shops. At least one of them (in Bensenville) got eaten up by the O'Hare runway expansion project shortly after I left there.

Since you are talking "Western Burbs", that may be a bit south of where I was. I am only aware of one, but it was a big place, and rather far down the road, so I'd be surprised if it was the same place.

Since there are no gun shops in Chicago proper, and since Chicago is bordered to the north/northeast by Lake Michigan and bordered to the east by Indiana, about 50% of the geography is eliminated. That keeps the total number of gun shops to a handful, or a double handful, if you go far enough outside Crook County.

Still, you have me wondering. Whoever they are, I hope they go out of business.

Plus $25 for a transfer is ridiculous stupid in my opinion.
I think this must be a joke--I see people bitching about $50 and $75 transfers all the time. I pay $20 these days, but I don't see $25 being unreasonable these days.

Pretty standard cost around here - $20 for the transfer and $5 for the call

knew better than to get into an argument with the guy.

NEVER argue with an idiot as they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Yeah it's not the transfer fee that I cared about. In fact it was the cheapest place I found within a 10 mile radius.

I will say that Bernadette at North American Firearms in Lombard is an amazing sweet lady! I should have done the transfer there but it's about 10-12 miles away (which means about a 20-25 minute drive around here). Sometimes worth it to go out of the way a little.

I also live in the western suburbs and have a pretty good idea who the owner is. Needless to say I won't buy a gun from him.

I recently purchased a LC9S from a LGS not far from there, and the owner couldn't have been nicer. I also ordered a XDS 4.0 45 from Buds and used them as the FFL. I asked them if it mattered whether I bought from them or Buds, and they told me in no uncertain terms that if Bud's was cheaper to order from them.

My rule of thumb is if I'm going to use the LGS to check out the gun and use their knowledge, I'm going to buy from them unless their price is out of line. If I know what I want, as I did with the XDS and they don't need to do anything but fill out some paperwork, I'll buy online if the price difference is significant.

Bernadette is the owner of the LGS I bought the LC9S from. A sweet lady is right. She and her son are a pleasure to do business with.

Nothing like perpetuating that good old anti-gun stereotype of gun owners.

Sounds like a real idiot that one.

Sounds like this guy chases away a lot of potential customers...less business for him probably adds to his negativity.

A couple months ago I started traveling 40 minutes to an outstanding shop. They do a lot of transfers($25), and appreciate the business. On my second transfer they offered me a brick of .22 LR for $30, not pre prices, but I was happy to get some. The friendly service I received from them "made" me buy a RIA 1911A1 from them a couple weeks ago. Attention to the customers needs can go a long way.

A local shop was charging 50 for transfier. Started during sandy hook when i wanted to order a p239. Never walked in that store again. I got lucky and a store opened up a little after. He is closer and cheaper.

$25 seems the 'general going rate'. The places local to me charge $50 for the first and $25 after, or $40. There's a nice place across down that only charges $25, but I don't currently have a car and the busses don't go down there, so it's a bit of a trip.

One place quoted me 10% of the value of the gun, per gun. I laughed and walked out.

Really, after that experience, I wouldn't go back because of any single reason, let along all of them. It seems like a lot of shop owners own their business because it's the only way they could keep a job.

There are a couple of really awful gun shops around Chicago, although the overall average attitude has improved over the last 10 or so years.

I think that attitude came, in part, from being harangued by Daley's 'CAGE' unit, feeling like you're the only gun store in 50 miles (which at times was nearly true) and dealing with various local governments that were often on the verge of legislating you out of business (which happened with more than one big shop, by the way.)

These days it's much better, with several shops you can actually bring your wife and kids into without cringing.

Are gun shop transfers supposed to charge sales tax for the full purchase price of the gun?

Had one stick me with the complete sales tax based on the invoice and wouldn't release the gun unless I paid it.

I know in WA they collect the "use tax", but the that's the only state I've heard doing that. Why is he charging you sales tax, did he sell you the gun? He's a crook. But that's the Chicago way.
