I met my neighbor at his house at 4:15 and we headed out into the woods. It was raining lightly but we figured it would let up.

By 4:45 we were in position, camo gear on, behind the blind and with two decoys about 10 yards out from us. Sadly it started to rain pretty good but we decided to stay anyway.

We began calling and eventually heard something answering in the distance. It was coming from off to our left so we were both focused pretty intensely in that direction. Suddenly we hear a thumping coming from directly in front of us. We looked and saw a coyote was attacking one of the decoys! He had worked right up on us with total stealth. We had no idea he was there and he had no idea we were there. He almost immediately realized he was in trouble and turned tail and ran. I had my Sig P226 on my hip but knew I would never get to it in time. So I jumped up but by the time I had my shotgun up to my shoulder he was 30 yards away and I knew I had no chance of taking him down.

Both my nieghbor and I were soaked through at this point and after standing around and laughing about it for a few minutes we called it a day and walked back home.

I was amazed by both the speed and surprise of the attack. I wish I had been watching the decoys to see where he actually came from. It was really quite amazing.

Anyway, thought you might enjoy my little bit of morning excitement!

That would have really been something to see! I guess us humans aren't the only thing hunting for horny toms in the spring. Did he actually touch your decoys or did he figure it out when he got close?
