interesting Walker

According to RL Wilsons "Colt an American Legend", the serial number on this gun puts it beyond the production run of Colts Walkers which I believe ended at 1340 which were "Transition Walkers" or "Whitneyville-Hartford Dragoons".

Also the serial numbers appear to be very poor in execution as well as the "US 1847". If he gets his price for this gun someone either got a "very rare" piece or a very old copy. Also the cylinder doesn't appear to be roll engraved but possibly acid etched, the lines are too soft.

Or on the other hand as Dennis Miller used to say, "I could be wrong".

Definitely looks repop to me.

Cool, for sure, but, not likely very old.

Fonts are modern, and non matching to eachother, which were used in the Stamping of the numerals.

My mysteriously 'plain' Uberti is more convincing at-a-glance if one wants to do a double-take...if of course having some stampings and so on an original would not.

I doubt anyone knowledgable will step up to the plate at that price.

Plus, the seller does not show us the underside of the Barrel..!

Cylinder looks a whole buncha 'Acid Etched' also...

On and on...

It does say copy, but "an old Colt copy from the late 1800's." That's quite a claim, too.

Like jwr 747 says,

his Colt Walker (copy) could be a neat addition to your collection.

Says it all in the first line. Even the seller admits it's not genuine.

The response via email

I asked the question and here is the answer:

Quote: "Yes, I guess I forgot to add it..... I offer a 3 day no shoot inspection with Buyer paying all shipping. Thus, from the time of delivery you have 3 days to inspect and return the gun. That is....in the mail on the way back on the 3rd day. I must recieve it in the same condition as sent. If I recieve in proper condition, I will immediately send back your money less shipping costs. I trust that will work for you." (End of quote)

In the listing he says it's a copy of course. So if anyone wants to spend their money. He's up front about it, except he didn't list the terms. Which of course he provided upon inquiry. Fair enough.

I wasn't questioning the seller's honesty, just standing next to him, looking at the gun, scratching my head and saying, "Yeah, was IS it?". Is it made of original parts, is it an "old copy", a repro that was aged, etc. I don't think the seller knows for sure, and of course he's up front about it - I was just pondering on the origins of the gun.

Not a problem pohill. You're correct the sellers doesn't know either. He made that clear. Higene is on the money with his illustrations and words of caution. I could afford to spend a couple of grand or more on an antique or a replica but I would be real carefull in verifying authenticity. You started a great thread here though with this particular weapon, overall let us just call it "food for thought". Thanks.

Sometimes when it comes to bidding on Gun Brokers it's about a buyer's experience, thought process or lack of.:)

Hard to tell just from photo's but IMHO it's a aged replica from the late 60's, early 70's. I don't think it's a late 1800's copy. What ever it is it has been very well done and would make a excellent display revolver. As far as price, that's up to the buyer if it's worth it. I paid more than NIB price for a aged Paterson and don't regret it at all, I been offered much more than I paid.

It's like the Spiller & Burr that I have. I know it's a repro but the only markings on it are "CSA" on the side of the frame, and the number 82 in several parts. The known Spiller & Burrs are listed in THE CONFEDERATE BRASS-FRAMED COLT & WHITNEY by William A. Albaugh III, and number 82 has not been accounted for. My point is that whoever defarbed my Spiller & Burr did a great job with some research behind it.
How would I sell the Spiller & Burr? With a big question mark, like the seller of this Walker is doing.
Again, I know it's a repro but who made it and when?

Pohill
Nice looking Spiller and Burr. She 's a keeper. Aged Paterson Replicas are hard to find at the moment. I'd love to add one to my collection but $550.+ is a bit much.
