Lets have a show of hands for those who can make it. [tentative]

Which would be preferred, a 1 day deal or something longer?

Any suggestions for a location for said shoot. [2 - have been suggested] Hardin County - Pine ridge - Hawkeye wildlife area - Near Iowa City.

not sure might be another Iowa shoot in April with some of the rare FullAuto guns at the other one. is a thread over on Ar15.com hometown Iowa

I am no longer a member over at ARFCOM but I do know the Iowa sect. mod. I am getting ahold of him to see if he would like to combine shoots..the more the merrier I say.

I will post as soon as I know some info as they were looking for a centralized place too!

I'm in Illinois. I'd be willing to make it to a shoot if it was near Iowa City. That's not a very long drive for me.

Anyone have a link to the thread on the AR forum?

Thanks

I have spoen with the Iowa Mod over on ARFCOM, I happen to know him and he is a class3 dealer. It looks like unless any major objections we will be combining the shoots.

Still working on places and details and will post when I have em

Iowa City

I live in Cedar Rapids, and thought that Matsell Bridge was the closest public range I could get to. Could someone post directions to the Hawkeye Wildlife Area range?

I know I don't post much, but I too would be interested in a shoot, even though my gun collection right now consists of only a 22/45 (which is technically my wife's).

Can't decide on stainless or parkerized for the Springfield GI.

More details

Ok here is what I have found out. We can either have our own shoot or join / combine the ARFCOM guys or have our own shoot and attend the other if you want also?

Lets sound off who could make what, when and where for numbers and be deciding? If we are going to have our own someone needs to step up to organize and coordinate.

The ARFCOM guys have set their shoot for 9:00 AM, April 30 at the Bays Branch Range located 2 miles North of Panora on Highway 4, 2.5 miles East on 190th Street in Guthrie County. between Panaora and Yale. Several of them are brining their wives also and the mod over at ARFOM who is setting this up is a Class 3 dealer so should have lots of fun toys to play with, I imagine he would be pretty generous with them if you provide some ammo or costs for it.

PS: A place that has camping would be fun if anyone is interested. The guys coming further could stay that way and there is nothing better than a evening BS session around a campfire. Please sound off if you would be up for that also and if whoever is planning could check on locations etc

Eastern Iowa

Panora is about 30 miles west of Des Moines, for those of you who don't use MapQuest.

Out of curiosity, I drove by the shooting range at Hawkeye Wilderness Area after work last night, and was kind of underwhelmed. There is a sign saying that the range is closed due to construction, but there were a couple of people shooting rifles. Both the rifle and pistol ranges look usable, since the construction appears to be occuring between them.

Parking is basically on the side of the (gravel) road, and the shooting positions are within 60 feet of traffic.

I guess I am either spoiled or more sensitive to facilities since I usually shoot with my wife, but the Matsell Bridge range is much nicer. The shooting positions on both the rifle and pistol ranges are covered and there is a large parking lot (and a bathroom structure) well back from the road. It is about 40 minutes from my house in CR, as opposed to 20 minutes to Hawkeye Wilderness Area, but is well worth the drive in my opinion, especially if you're looking to make a day of shooting.

I don't know about camping, nor do I know how the park ranger will react to rapid fire or even automatic shooting. I also don't have contact information handy to find answers.

Since I am very much an underarmed newby, I'm not sure my opinion matters, but I would pick a shorter drive over access to a large collection of automatic weapons. So what if my priorities are out of whack?

nope everyones opinion counts atleast a little. On planning these things there is never a way to accomodate everyone. Best we can do is to come up with a overall plan that works for the majority that can attend.

eastern Iowa and the Matsell bridge area sounds like it might be the choice then? If someone could find out about it that would be good? what are the hours, is rapid fire a problem, is there camping nearby, Is there a badge heavy ranger that will freak on seeing evil black rifles....

Anyone else...anyone...

My vote is still for Hardin County, but if the majority decides on somewhere else thats fine with me.

I suggest we move it to May to give everyone more time to plan and adjust their schedules since it's a week till April and nothing definate has been planned yet. Also, it's been a cold, windy spring so far and the weather may still be questionable.

These are just suggestions, I don't want special accomodations made just for me.

Iowa shoot.

Slugs, i don't know why but shoots that have been planned for this area never seem to go well? I've been around this board and others and it never fails, interest then other things come up, interest seems to wane after initial planning stages.

We need to get a count of how many are going and will show up, then go from there to set a date.

12-34hom:

Sorry it took so long to respond to your last post.

That's disappointing to hear. I can tell you that I could maybe make it to an April shoot as long as I don't have to drive 100 miles (I'm in central IA), and I could certainly make it to a May shoot.

I'm eager to meet some fellow gun folks and make new friends, even if they live a ways away. As I told IAJack, I desperately need some instruction from more experienced shooters, and just need to be around like minded people for awhile, instead of the indifferent folks I'm surrounded by.

Haven't heard from you in a while IAJack, hope things are going ok for you.

Still watching

I'm still paying attention to this thread. I've been travelling for work, and haven't made any effort to contact the park ranger at Matsell Bridge. I might drive to Hardin County to meet some other shooters, but my wife won't. I also got the impression that eastern Iowa would attract more shooters, particularly those from western Illinois.

I'm only available about every other weekend though, so I don't want to push decisions about location or format and then not be able to make it on the date that works best for everyone else.

Just saw this... I live in Central Iowa to, most of my weekends are pretty busy in April, but if I am free I'd be all about it. Don't own any NFA weopons but would love to shoot some, or even handle some.

Charby

Well, Charby, maybe at least us two could get together sometime soon. Let me know when and where works best for you, for me it would be a Saturday morning. I'm in Marshall county, is that close to you?

most of my weekends are pretty busy in April

I know how that is, money & time are pretty tight around here. :(

(I am editing this post because I realized that it sounded like I was saying to Charby "to heck with everybody else", and thats not the case. I'm suggesting he and I get together on our own since we're appearantly so close. I still want to see this big get-together come to fruition. If Charby and I were to decide on a time to shoot together, anyone else would be welcome in my book.)

New site open to help us in the Hawkeye state. There is a forum for us there as well in order to rally for our cause of changing Iowa to "shall issue" Also alot of info from a recent inventory we did of Iowa CCW permits at the Dept. of Public Safety.

Hopw everyone will join

awesome.

unfortunately been couple deaths in my family. Real Life was pretty busy before that happened. I would love to make the shoot but as things are going it would be unwise for me to commit to anything as I may not be able to follow through.

great about the IowaCarry.org site

Looks like towards the end of April might be a better time to get everyone together and let the weather get warmed up -keep checking in
