...try the Ames Izaak Walton League....one of the nicest facilities around. Also try Butch Olafson range near Big Creek...Polk City

Rembrandt: If i'm a member of the CR Ike's league, can I get in to shoot over there? The one here has an electronic gate key system...not sure if it's local only or any Ike's member.

Redpath and IAJack: that pit is great...unless you're doing anything where you might need a bench, target holders, or any idea how far out it goes. You can pretty much shoot anything you want there...it's unsupervised (for now), so anything that won't destroy the place is game. (no dragon's breath, the trees might burn) People used to bring their junk out to shootup..old TV's/monitors, computers, stoves, microwaves, old propane tanks (w/o OPD...they won't fill them anymore), and all kinds of schtuff. As it's unsupervised, I'm sure any gun is game...whether it's black powder, .50BMG, class III, shotgun, rifle, pistol, and any caliber cartridge you can buy. And loud booms, or rapid fire? Heck, they're fun! I regularly dump my mag as fast as I can. It's usually not too scary, then again, I haven't been able to get down there on a saturday for a while. :D

I'm definitly going to check out the Palo and Washington ranges. Where is the palo one at? BTW, I'm going to go to the swisher one tonight after work (5-6ish) to try my new gun out if anyone wants to head out.

I don't live in Iowa but we get over to Muscatine several times a year to see the Wife's Family. She's an Iowaegian by birth.

We travel through Illinois & usually come down I-80 and cross the Mississippi over by the Quad Cities area.

Anybody know of any rifle & pistol shooting ranges in and around the Quad Cities and Muscatine areas and all areas in between both cities?

I'm not there often enough to justify joining a Shooting Club but would gladly travel to a Range that's open to the Public or a Gun Shop Range.

I fondly recall my first visit to Iowa. I was introduced to the local Gourmet Specialties, Fried Catfish, Roasted corn on the cob, Deer Venison Hamburgers and best of all, Maid Rite Sandwhiches. Yummy...:D

wow 2 pages...

....most from the same ppl but a good start.

It is my hope that everyone can maybe get to know everyone else and will add them to their e-mail lists. We might not be able to get together to shoot all that often but sure be nice to get to know some more fellow shooters around the state.

We also need to band together and become a stronger group on working towards changing concealed carry status to shall issue. Unfortunatly that won't even have a chance untill we get Vilsack-O-???? out of there! Seems Iowa is always about 10 yrs behind everywhere else. Whats the outlook or status in your County? Here (Mahaska) it is pretty well a no go. I have one but it is restricted to being useless. I have been told it is illegal and could be fought but I havent the resources or connections to do so? So I just went ahead and got about every out of state permit I could. My NRA instructor staus is accepted everywhere esle..but no not in this bass ackwards state. The course they give for a permit here is a JOKE!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I an a certified pistol and defense instructor so if you or anyone you know would like a class or some pointers I'd be glad to help just for the experience and at no charge.

Unfortunately being a member at one Ikes Chapter does not entitle you access to another...each is independently operated by the local Chapter. The Ames Izaak Walton League does offer a number of "Public Shooting competitions" that are open to anyone....one of the more popular is the annual "Iowa Games" shooting events....contestants from all over Iowa attend each year. Below are links to the Ikes and some other local ranges. enjoy...

well, most of the posts being from the same numbers isn't that suprising...if that's all the people from Iowa. (not likely, but close) I'd certainly be down with a pistol class...free, reduced price, or not. IIRC, i'd need one to get a CCW anyway. Does your class qualify for that? Also, do you know if you can use a .22 pistol to qualify for CCW? I'm pretty accurate with my 22/45, but I just got my first centerfire pistol (Bersa .380) and not any good yet.

Re: Ikes membership....i was told that joining my local league makes me a member of the national IWL, but it makes sense you'd have to pay the local league to shoot on their land.

Im an ex Hawkeye too!! In fact, I still have my place for sale in davenport. I make it back to there, IC and Des Moines and CR on quite a regular basis.

I'd love to meet up and shoot with some of ya.. I grew up in IC, so i know the "pit" and its associated mess. Still got family in Nichols, IC, CR, and DM, so theres lotsa places for an excuse to go that way :D

I'm from Cedar Rapids. Please put me on the mailing list [email protected] Because of my work schedule I'm limited to shooting on weekends but come spring I'll be out shooting nearly every weekend.

We also need to band together and become a stronger group on working towards changing concealed carry status to shall issue.

Currently I'm more concerned that the AWB goes down in flames.

I'm from the other side of the state & don't really know many folks from around here. Up until recently I've mostly shot handguns at Sports Outfitters on 16th Ave. I wouldn't recommend anyone go there though as the owner can be a first class Richard Head at times. I've gotten into C&R rifles lately & need to find a good place to shoot them. I've been to Matzel Bridge a couple of times & it seems like a halfway decent place.

dont mind the old man at Sports Outfitters after a while he is not as bad.

how is Matzel Bridge?

I have only shot at Sports Outfitters and the shooting range between swisher and north liberty. easy to get to from Cedar Rapids.

guess its now Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting range location looks right
from cedar rapids take 6th street head south or the interstate like your going to Iowa city take swisher exit off then right turn (should see sinclair gas station)from exit and then left turn at the lights. next turn on the right 5-7 miles down the road maybe. turn right when you see the wetlands then head straight on gravel road till you get to the range.

Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting Range
Located 2 miles North of North Liberty on Highway 965, 1.5 miles West on Swan Lake Road, 3/4 mile East of Swisher on F12, 2.5 miles South on Highway 965, 1/2 mile West on Amana Road in Johnson County.

used to be a total dump though has been cleaned up over years specially this last year. supposed to have 100 yard rifle range though large concrete tubes you have to shoot through. 25 yard pistol range also. not sure whats like as of lately. last I knew incomplete.

Amen to that

Isn't Muscatine the home of author Max Allan Collins, who wrote "Road to Perdition" and the novelization of "Saving Private Ryan"?

(I don't live in Iowa, but I've read several of Collins's books.)

Please send me some info, I'd love to make some new buddies (esp. gunnie buds)

I'm in Marshall Co., but have a baby coming in about a month, so I don't know how far I can travel or how long I can stay away in the near future.

I'll band together with anyone who wants to change CCW here. I have also been trying to contact CCW4IOWA lately, but havn't got a reply. Sometimes I think I'm the only one in the state who even gives a rip.

I think I mentioned this before IAJack but I used to live down in Eddyville and still get back there every other month or so. I have my own little private range at my inlaws house, but wouldn't mind going to shoot somewhere else. When I am at my inlaws I usually shoot by myself so a little company would be apreciated.

Did you guys get a new Sheriff who will issue permits??

Keep me informed if you are going to have any sort of get together in SE Iowa I will try to make it.

April would be good.

Sound off if somoen has a central place in mind etc?

We can bring the BBQ grill and make a pot luck party out of it - or a weekend campout party if any takers!

Steamboat Rock (Hardin County) has a state park with a rifle range (fishing and camping right there too), to my knowlege it would be free, but I've never been there so I don't know for sure. That's about as central and open to the public as I can think of. Any thoughts on this?

Lets do it,

Anyone else still here or watching this thread. I say it is time for an Iowa shooters convention and BBQ

Many moons ago, before I developed an unhealthy interest in firearms, I attended college at the U of I in Iowa City. Great place in which to live, with lots of friendly people and a terrific faculty at the U. I still have friends living in Iowa City, and drive down there at least once a year to visit. Boy, has that city undergone a transformation in recent years! What's with all the new parking ramps sprouting up all over downtown IC??? I was sad to discover that Pearson's Drug Store at the corner of Market and Linn, with its cozy little diner in the rear that served the BEST MALTS ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET, was gone.

On a few of my recent trips to IC, I took some guns along, to introduce my friends living there to shooting. I cannot recall the exact location, but we drove out to an unsupervised shooting "range" at a gravel pit just outside of North Liberty (I believe). This "range" was a real dump, with no benches, tables, target stands or whatnot. At least we got to experiment with some "free form" shooting. :D

I might be interested in attending a shooting meet in IA, if one is arranged.

DL

Sioux City here...and not a decent place to shoot. On top of that, the Woodbury Sheriff does not believe in CCW...overall a genuinely anti-handgun town.

April shoot.

I can check that park out in Hardin County and see what type of range is there, i go fishing at the state park very near there. [Pine Lake] [It has excellent camping facilities & would be a great place for a one day type of deal.] This place is called pine ridge shooting area, it is 1 mile weat of Steamboat Rock od county road S -56.

The range at the Hawkeye wildlife area would be ok also. Probably more convienient to get to for most of the guys i see located here.

12-34hom.

Guess what 12-34hom, I nominate you planning coordinator!

Any seconds

Go Hawks!

I haven't noticed much Iowan activity in the short time I've looked around here, so a gathering would be cool. The farther east and the more central the better.

Later :D

PS: where is this Matzel Bridge place?
