Iron sights and flash suppressor on modified Mosin-Nagant?

Hi, folks. I could use your advice, please.

I'm busy converting a Mosin-Nagant into a Scout rifle, as I mentioned in this thread. For those who didn't read it, I'll recap my post there:

I accepted a challenge from a friend to produce a Scout rifle that would take any game in the Lower 48 states for less than $250.00 total expenditure. I began with a Mosin-Nagant ($75, IIRC). I'm doing the stock reduction myself, and will have to pay a gunsmith to shorten the barrel and re-crown it. I'm putting a Scout scope mount in place of the rear sight, and will top it with a 2x or 4x pistol scope with reasonably fine crosshairs. I reckon that my total expenditure should be under $200, much less $250, at that point. I'll then put a Safari Ching Sling on it, and I'll have to see about backup iron sights - I might have to use a sight that can be clipped on to the Scout scope base once the telescopic sight is removed.

Now, I know that the 7.62x54 round produces a humongous muzzle flash from the M44 carbine, and I'm sure I'll have the same problem with this Scout project. I was thinking of putting a .30-caliber flash suppressor on this rifle, to help deal with the problem.

Any advice on whether or not this is a good idea? Any advice on the best suppressor to use? It's legal enough, as this isn't a semi-auto assault weapon, but the technicalities are where it gets interesting!

Also, I'd appreciate advice on fitting backup iron sights to this thing. Obviously, the original front sight will not be suitable, and the rear sight will be replaced by the Scout scope mount. I'm thinking of attaching something like the XS Sights ghost-ring mount, front and rear, but there may be other options. Whatever I fit will have to be usable with the scope removed, but the scope mount still in place. Any suggestions?

I m interested in this question as well. Lots of muzzle brakes for the Mosin-type rifles, but no flash hiders.

At one time, Florida Ammo Traders was selling a sporter MN carbine fitted with an FAL flash hider. I believe that it was the T48 style. Perhaps an M14 flash hider would work as well. The only thing is that both of these are kind of long and that might intefere with "short & handy" Scout concept.

The Imbel Flash Hider isn't that long. Have a gunsmith thread the barrel and screw it on. I have one at the house, I'll send you for free Preacherman.

If you were set up for reloading, then you could develop a low flash load that would be accurate in your rifle. Otherwise I'd look at the Phantom or Vortex flash hider. JT has some nice ones for a reasonable price. Their slotted flash hider looks pretty interesting as well.

No ping on expertise nor any criticism meant, just a question: would that FAL device above be a flash hider or muzzle brake?
I thought that flash hiders generally needed long slots parallel to the bore axis to 'work', and that holes made it a muzzle brake.

I sure am no expert just want to be sure.

Well, I was looking for info on a project similar to Preacherman's and ran across this thread. I'm using an M44 as my base rifle, however, and have been trying to figure out how to work in new sights, both front and rear. I'd like an aperture rear and heavy post front setup that won't need a hood. And I've been looking for low-mount rear sights that won't interfere with a scout scope's sight picture if installed on the receiver (ie the removable weaver-mount type with a drilled and tapped base added to the receiver).

So, I just had to ask, Preacherman, what did you finally end up with, sight-wise?
