irrational and unfounded fears

leaving the stove on, when leaving the house....
..no matter what gun carried :)

That my friends don't follow the four safety rules. Heck, my best friend was looking over my nagant revolver, I go to the bathroom and here he is looking right down the barrel, after a shutter I quickly feild stripped the thing and let him look at the barrel all he wanted. Yes, it was unloaded but just seeing that freaked me out.

I have to admit that I have had a couple of fears. One is when I first started carrying that a round in the chamber would 'just go off' so for the first couple days I carried without on in the chamber. Shortly after, I realized that it was kind of ridiculous. I now carry one in chamber.

Another I have had is dropping a revolver on the hammer with a round underneath. Unfortunately, this became a reality for me. Luckily though the revolver had a transfer bar. I fumbled a draw (trying to set it on the desk) and it landed on the hammer on a wooden floor muzzle pointing straight at my head. :what: I must say my heart rate was very elevated for awhile.

I have the quite rational fear that I'll try to get a friend or someone into firearms... and they'll break one of the four rules.

Aside from that... carrying firearms with a round chambered and a safety device disengaged by pulling the trigger and nothing else, to me, seems dangerous.
I no like GLOCKs for this reason... :(

I hate misfires. No matter how long I leave the faulty cartridge in the chamber, I always think it'll go off as soon as I cycle it out of the weapon.

That's mainly why I stopped shooting Pakistani ammo in my Enfield.

Thats abotu the only thing that scares me.

I have only one that I am aware of, It happened to me once, and I can only hope it was the last time.

The drive from my house to the range takes about 45 minutes, I was taking a friend to the range to help her learn to shoot, When we got there I realized " I had all of the guns, but NO ammunition" It was back at the house. (BUMMER)

I don't know if you'd call it irrational but I fear lowering the hammer over a live round on DA pistol designs that don't have a decock lever, in fact I've never tried it.

I fear that, when lowering the hammer on a live round, the pistol would fire and the slide would injure my hand. This doesn't prevent me from doing it for practice, though.
I also fear that, when shooting reloaded rounds, even if I try to be very careful when reloading, something goes wrong and the pistol would explode in my face. I'm a bit anxious for the first 15 rounds or so (this makes my fear irrational, since the chance of an accident do not decrease with the number of rounds being shot).
Regards,
Goerz

I can't decide if it is irrational or just good practice, but whenever I leave a loaded gun sitting on my table, I always go out of my way not to walk in front of the barrel. The logical side of me realizes that a gun will not fire on its own while sitting on a table, but I still avoid it, even though I am the only one home.

I'd like to talk for a bit about some of the irrational fears some of us shooters have about firearms.

I have a (mostly) irrational fear of killing myself and/or my downstairs neighbor. The floors are thin...I'm not talking ND, I'm worried about structural collapse from the excessive weight in my closet.

On a slightly more serious note, I have never been able to shake a fear of that first shot fired out of any gun that I have not personally field stripped and then reassembled.

Not irrational, I do the same. I do it because I know that the firearm was built by a human and humans are very imperfect, and that could cause a part to malfunction. The chances of that happening, pretty low. But it can. It could be a playoff gun.

Not irrational but one that scares the crap outa me. ME screwing up and hurting someone because of negligence.

Can't bring myself to carry a Glock. For some reason I just don't feel comfortable with the trigger. Seems like its way to easy to fire. Silly, I know.

If it's silly then I share that concern. I bought my Springfield XD in part because it has a grip safety. I know many people carry a Glock, but for me it seems more risky without the grip safety.

I understand the want to not have too many safeties, but I also agree that I don't feel confortable just with a "Glock Safety" on a autoloader. the XD is a better safety setup.

I worry about things that go bump in the night. I worry more about incorrectly identifying the bumps and shooting a good guy. Like, if my roommate and I both hear the bump and I catch a load of buckshot while I'm pumping him full of 9mm. Turns out to be the dishwasher.

+1 to this. I jokingly badger people that aren't comfortable carrying a 1911 cocked and locked.. but I can't bring myself to carry a Glock.

If there isn't a manual thumb safety on the gun, then it's DA/SA for me... even though I don't particularly like the action.

Hmm. My only irrational fear in regards to guns is that I might not dispatch the goblin breaking down my front door with one shot. I'd rather not spend any more money on ammo killing those dirtbags than I really have to.

I have had numerous nightmares about total gun bans being instituted in this country. Irrational? No. It could happen anytime we are silly enough to let our guard down.

Other than that, I never had any "irrational" fears about firearms. I always seen them as protective tools, extremely safe to use, if you know what you are doing.

I get real itchy when those less experienced are handling firearms around me. Sweeping me and others, doing unsafe things. I don't worry about dropped rounds at all and don't worry about dropped firearms once I've taken precautions.

Carrying IWB --- front

thinking what happens if that round in the chamber goes off, while a quik draw and squeezing the trigger by mistake to soon!

Thanks! I just got my SmartCarry and I'm trying to work through this! :uhoh: :what:

I occasionally have a nightmare where I'm in a situation where I have to use a gun, and it fires, but has absolutely no effect.

I also have nightmares sometimes that I have to fire my gun, and when I do the bullet comes out at like 2 fps and arcs and falls to the ground with no potency. I have even pressed my gun to the head of the bad-guy in frustration, and when I pull the trigger the bullet just gets lodged in the barrel because it's moving so slowly.

However, my 1911 is in condition 1 at all times, and I have never had any phobias about it at all... The thumb safety on 1911's has a very comforting affect on me. I think it's a genius design.
