Is .35 Whelen For Me?

But the .35 Whelen is a 06, .35-06 that is

And a .458 Lott is just a necked up .375H&H. And a .458 WM is just a necked up .264. The list goes on and on but it doesn't have anything to do with performance limitations based on the parent cartridge.

Your CZ's in 9.3 are built on a full length action with a spacer in the magazine well to make up for the extra length. So you really aren't gaining anything with that rifle. In a Mauser build you are getting the real deal for action length.
That's interesting, don't know why they would do a silly thing like that. At any rate, the .375H&H will typically cost a bit more than competing long action chamberings (despite action length)...if that's even a concern.

:)

Saves money it's much cheaper to only have to tool up for one action length and patch up the differences with magazine spacers than to have build multiple action lengths.

Guess what? Many companies do the same.

I realize that it is often commonplace, however they already have a standard length action (for .30-06Spd. and the like) in the 550, why not use the same for the similarly sized 9.3x62mmMauser?

:)

Maverick,

I might be mistaken they might be using the magazine block spacers in their short action stuff.

Most folks haven't the slightest clue what kind of performance a heavy slug, in a solidly built bullet, at moderate velocity will give you in way of penetration.

You are correct, sir. I probably was one of that crowd until I began elk hunting and found out that penetration is paramount.

Some have insinuated that the 338-06/35 Whelen isn't much more punkin' than the 30-06 is. To my way of thinking, that's the same as saying that the 338 WM isn't much more punkin' than the 300 WM, which too is a little silly.

I think you hit the nail on the head there...IIRC they don't build a short action, just a standard/long and a magnum in the 550. OTOH, I believe all the 527s are short actions, but they are CZs equivalent of a small ring "mini-mauser" action, so they can't chamber anything terribly potent either. Seems that they go from one extreme to the other.
