What I really like about the caliber & barrel length combo is that the case volume vs. barrel volume ratio is still very good. The 18.5" barrel has the same volume as a 25.8" barrel in .30-06 and the Whelen has only about 3% larger nominal case capacity. Muzzle report is noticeably quieter and while I haven't shot any loads through chrony yet, the information available online suggests that velocity loss compared to a rifle-length barrel isn't very drastic.
