Is a minty (1954) Savage 99EG a good trade for my minty (1959) Win 70?

Someone has offered to even trade me a 99% condition (1954) Savage 99EG in .300 Savage for my 99% condition (1959) Winchester Model 70 in .270 Winchester. According to the 21st Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values, my gun is worth about $300 more, but this fellow insists that he would have no trouble getting a grand for his 99 despite the published Blue Book value. Any Savage/Winchester value experts out there that can give me some advice?

but this fellow insists that he would have no trouble getting a grand for his 99

I think he would have considerable trouble fetching that price for his 99......
My 2cents....keep the Model 70.........

Savage 99's are very overpriced right now as it is, but the only place that you'll see that kind of coin bandied about for 'em is on the auction site's asking prices.

If he thinks he can get that for his Savage - let him sell it and bring you the cash that yours is worth.

According to him, the Savage 99s are going up in price every year by considerably more than the pre-64 70s are. Can anyone verify that fact?

These were his words in an email.
I can sell my rifle for 900 to 1000 in a heart beat. The pre-64 70s you see on GA are inflated and are not selling at those prices. There are few and far between 99s in new condition and there will not be any more. The prices for mdl 70s has been the same for about 4 years with very little increase in prices. There are just too many. The 99 has been going up about 20% a year. So I will just sit on it for a while if you don't want to trade.
Any truth to that?

Are you in it for the appreciation value only?
The Md 99 in .300 sav was a great deer gun and more collectable then say the same gun in a .308.

But a pre 64 Md 70 I believe is always going to be more collectable I don't care how much they are over valued they're still going to be easier to sell then the savage.

Here's the thing. I already have a nearly identical Winchester pre-64 70 in .30-06, and I don't have a Savage 99. I have always wanted one in .300 Savage, and this trade offer seemed like a good idea, only I asked for a little cash on top of the Savage for the trade, at which the guy acted insulted. Truth is, I am not even sure he still wants the deal after I "insulted" him by asking him to add some cash to the deal based on respective Blue Book values. Based on what people are asking for similar Savages at Guns America, however, it might actually be a pretty even trade. Just wanted to see what you guys thought of it. So far it looks like opinions are mainly negative in terms of my getting a good deal from an even trade.

It's the bottom Savage in the first thumbnail that he wants to trade for the pre-64 in the second thumbnail.

I'd keep the .270 anyway, the 30-06 combo sounds perfect!I collect 99s, somewhat and I'd keep the Mod 70. A 99% 1959 .270 might be the perfect deer gun!

They all look like fine guns, and that savage is sexy with the Schnabel forend.but I think you correct to hold out for a little to-boot.
The problem with using inter-net auctions as a price guide is you really have to crunch a lot of numbers to come up with an accurate reference price and that should be only on guns sold as apposed to asking prices.

If it were me I'd dump the 06 keep the .270 and add a .375HH kinda like a jack Oc/Elmer K tribute.;)

Keep the Winchester.

Going price for standard grade pre 64 Winchester in .270, in excellent condition is about $900-1100 depending on the area. Savage is somewhere in the same area (little less), but it is much easier to sell Winchester, since more people collect them, and some buy them as donor guns for custom work.
Savage is great, but keep the Wonchester (or sell it to me).

That is a TERRIBLE barometer of their worth. A better measure would be to look at the Savage 99 auctions on Auction Arms that actually result in a sale. You'll find that most of the auctions hover in the $400-$600 range with anything over $700 simply not selling.

Thanks for all the information, guys. The man has apparently pulled out of negotiations entirely, however. He never got over the "insult." He claims I already made a deal with him to make an even trade. All I actually did was express a preliminary willingness to work out a trade, based on those two rifles, since I clearly wanted his rifle and he clearly wanted mine. I never said, "Ok, let's do an even trade." What can you do? People take from what they read what they want to take from it.

Unless I was the one with the 99 I'd have passed on the deal too. BTW, one of these days my FIL is going to hand over his pre-64 M70 Featherweight in .270. I can hardly wait until he's done with it.

Hawkeye, his "insultedness" is his way of saving face, since he's not going to get what he wanted, anyway...

He asked me for my bottom line offer, and I asked for $275 plus his rifle for mine. I figured he'd turn me down, and that's just what he did. Deal is off.

Check out Gunbroker. There seem to be quite a few in the $500-600 range (when you use "buy it now").
I'm heading back to NY State to visit my folks, and the Savages were always super popular there for deer hunters, which means that they tend to show up on the used gun racks in gun shops. I can think of four gun shops within 20 minutes of my parents' home that always carry lots of used guns, and I am sure I will be able to find one on this trip for a reasonable price. Last year I was up there I saw one for about $375 that was in great shape and just what I wanted. I haven't stopped kicking myself for not scraping up the cash at the time. This time I will be ready to buy.

Some of the very worst gun deals I've ever made were done because I was "head-over-heels" about a new (at least to me) gun and needed one of my guns( due to being cash poor) to consumate the deal. When I've saved up enough cash and am not offering one of my own as a sacrificial lamb to sweeten the pot for somebody else, I tend to make much better "deals".

I have to agree with you there.

Realizing that this is now moot.............no friggin' way!!!!!!

If that M70 is as clean and honest as it looks you would have been making a mistake.
