Is an "underwater hunting" thread allowed?

I am! (I think it should be allowed, there are more types of hunting than just archery and firearm!)
I just replaced all the line on my reel, oiled that sucker up, and gave it a test run.

Oh yeah, checking and fixing all my crab pots and dewinterizing the boat this weekend. Suppose to be an awesome humpy run into Puget Sound this year. The smoker and canner are going to be busy this summer.

crab is delicious...that is one of the problem's with living in Indy, no ocean! plenty of streams and rivers though. Anyone here enjoy boiled crayfish?

I am just waiting for the Crappie to spawn. Oh yeah one of my favorite times of the year. Then after that its off to Texoma for some summer trolling for those stripped bass.

You guys want to see some impressive underwater hunting pics... google bluewater hunting... these guys freedive(no tanks) for trophy gamefish with spearguns !!!

I've seen that before. Those guys are crazy. I am more than a little hesitant to free dive in the ocean. There are a lot of things that can eat you, sting you,or just plain mess you up.

Can we talk fishin or no?
you must be extremely bored... i can only think of one other thing that would be more incredibly boring than fishing, and that is talking about fishing!

Anyone oilin' up their reels for the spring at this point? I'm fired up!
i'd be fired up too if i had to go out and fish.

best of luck to you in finding a way to wiggle out of that.

...and if you are doing it voluntarily (??? people do it on purpose, incredibly enough!!!), always remember, if it is nice enough to be out fishing, it most certainly is nice enough to be doing anything else, especially load development, target shooting, hunting...

again, best wishes for a speedy recovery. hope the thought passes soon.

haha fishing can be boring, but only if you don't enjoy nature! fishing isn't just about getting a fish on your line. it's about being on or near the water and watching what's happening around you. try it, it's enjoyable

years ago a buddy and i did some camping and diving in lake travis. we had a speargun and a tub of worms. along a dropoff in about ten feet of water, we found that by releasing a worm next to the rock face a crappie or bass would stick it's head out far enough for us to get a shot at it. we had fried fish every night.

Most Definitely

Got my personal best walleye about this time last year near Red Wing, MN, 11 pounds. Hoping I can beat it here one of these days! I'm mostly a muskie hunter though. Best o' luck on the water to everyone this year!

I love some walleye. I used to go to Leech Lake as a kid up until I was 16 or so. My dad always wanted to catch a 48"+ muskie. I always liked the idea of that also so I went with him all of the time. Can only troll for pike so much you know. When I was about 13 I had a huge muskie follow my bucktail to the boat. My dad had tried prepping me for that day, " Always do a figure 8 at the edge of the boat incase you have one following your lure." This day when I saw that giant a figure 8 was the last thing on my mind. The only thing I could think of doing was to pull that bucktail out of the water as fast as humanly possible. I shouted " Dad! A huge muskie right there." I didn't want a fish that big in our little Lund with us for nothing. Looking back I wish I would have caught that fish. Minnesota is hard to beat for fishing.

Speargun=Underwater Hunting

Come down to Coastal North Carolina and I will show you how it's done. We shoot Tuna, Amberjacks, Cobia, and Grouper to 100+lbs. Dolphin (Mahi) and Mackerals to 40+lbs. Snappers, and reef fish to 30+lbs. Plenty of Spiny Lobsters too, and they get BIG. (Like 15+lbs big).

BTW....If you have a rational, or irrational fear of sharks then this is NOT the hobby for you.

spearfishing is a blast done it a couple of times in the bahamas and south florida. Never really shot anything that big but its still alot of fun. my biggest was about 7 pound mutton snapper and a ton of lobsters tell you what them mutton snapper taste nothing like the name those things are good. I now have this sudden urge to get my reels out and get to workin on them.

I think I'll have to take up spearfishing to get anything - the regular way is not working. I fished all day yesterday and got skunked worse than I ever have in my entire life. Fishing report for this lake was:

1. Smallmouth good on crankbaits
2. Channel and Blue cat good on cut and whole shad
3. Walleye good
4. Crappie good on jigs and minnows at 8-10 feet

Not FAIR fishing, mind you - GOOD for all of them!

Caught nothing but ONE tiny little smallmouth. Tried minnows, catfish poles with shad, crankbaits, rooster tails, plastics, younameit, and 4 different locations. Horrendous start to the spring season - but, the weather was great at least. :)

I've been looking for a place to ask about this... I've been curious about bow-fishing ever since coming across some people snagging carp out of the Minnesota river as a teen. I always thought you had to be native to do anything close to "spearing" in my state, but that might just be a popular misconception. The kids doing this were in the middle of a wildlife refuge area pretty much in the backyard of medium density residential that I believe is off limits to any kind of hunting so I imagine they were breaking rules in the first place by being there with bows and arrows... I've since tried researching the MN DNR fishing regs, but haven't found any good set of regulations or guidelines for this sport. There is a near by archery range that is "calling" me... id like to see exactly what I can and cannot do before investing a cent into equipment, I have a feeling Id be limited to non-game fish such as carp but not really sure.

Does anyone here do this? Id like to hear if you do.

Maybe I will have to try this with black bear. A baited hook and line. I can imagine trying to manage the drag, and keep taking up the slack when he starts running towards me.

Afterall, muay thai for black bear is so last year.

I think it should be allowed, there are more types of hunting than just archery and firearm!

Why would "fishing" imply that you're not using archery or firearms?:D

Sounds like you need one of these for underwater hunting.

Something tells me 5.56 isn't exactly the best caliber for shark though.

Rmuzz, bowfishing in MN is only for rough fish. There is a spearing season for pike through the ice.
