I was using 6.5 gr WSF in my glock 22 with a 165 gr bullet and doing well with it but then I tried 7.4 gr Hodgden Longshot and what a difference in velocity but less pressure and the accuracy was amazing. 5 shots inside 2 inches offhand at 25 ft. Has anybody else tried Longshot and had a good or bad experience - so far I think it is a great powder for 40 sw and my 10mm loves it also.
Thanks in advance

Longshot is usually the king of velocity and generally great accuracy. I tried it and was always impressed with it, but got tired of the recoil. It made me hate to shoot the .40, so I quit using it for more sane powders. I know I took some Double Tap rounds apart and the powder inside was Longshot.I confirmed this with them(for that cal.anyway, won't say which one).

They should call it Loudshot, but it certainly will give excellent velocities.

IMO there is no better powder for the 10mm & 40 S&W. it's extremely accurate and delivers high velocities but like said above, it does generate a lot of recoil and it is LOUD!

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

In a Glock 22 [with improved case support] I worked the book load of 6 gr Longshot 200 gr up to 12 gr and it blew a little hole in the case and the extractor pulled the case head off slightly. No reason to go any higher, but I was impressed with the recoil. Lots of power. More than almost any powder I tried except 800X. And 800X meters terribly, and the burning flakes can burn a hole in the paint job.

I use Longshot in two 40 cals, they push 180gr XTPs to remarkable speed with a full 8gr charge. Not any more noise or muzzle flash in my 3.8 and 4.5" barrels as others have said, but the recoil is a bit more stout for sure, feels like a real 10mm. Going to load up some Longshot loads for my 147gr 9mm too, they are supposed to push them past 1000fps :D

I tried LS a long time ago with 135gr JHP at 1500 FPS, but the power was so fierce I got scared, ran away, and hid.

I absolutely love Longshot for my .40 S&W and 9mm loads. I have been using it for many years and have no plans of changing what has worked so well for so long.

A few years ago I made a mistake with the data and had dropped a 1.1 charge over max in a box of 155 gr. XTP's and nothing unusual happened, other than incrreased velocity that is. My point is, it is a very friendly powder and slow enough burning that doing work ups isn't a spikey process as with faster burning powders.

I do 147 gr. XTP's 9mm that hit 1050-ish with Longshot. granted the charge is over published max, but I'm not having any pressure issues at all. G?reat stuff!

Did they look like this?

Almost. The problem with Long Shot is you need a stronger recoil spring too. Otherwise it is easy to get carried away, kinda like Clark with Power Pistol.

My son gave me a 1/2 lb. of longshot and need to find what I can put it in.
Where can I find some handgun info.?????????????
.357 or 44 specs. will work.
Mostly for cast loads.

Just want to use the stuff up.

Longshot is my favorite powder for JHP's in the .40 S&W, it also works well for Hot loads in the .45 acp. For the 9mm & .380 I like Power Pistol for hot rod loads. LM

Funny how a powder designed for shotguns can outperform the million "pistol powders" out there. I cannot find a published load on any other powder that will push a 180gr 40 to nearly 1200fps. Cycles perfect in the XDm and Sig 226 too. No major pressure signs, but it will sling the brass as far as the bullet, just don't stand to the right of someone shooting it, that brass stings. Probably should invest in a stiffer recoil spring.

That's another favorite use I load it for, pheasant loads!
And for handgun AL's I use it in the PT92F, numerous Taurus's, XDM's just to mention a few of my most used ones. Another great powder for 9mm and .40 S&W that I like almost as much, is HS6. But still, the Longshot is a bit slower burning and will exceed HS6 capabilities, and I also find it to be slightly more user friendly regarding pressure / velocity consistency.

Looks like Hodgdon has some Lil'Gun data for .32 Mag, .327 Fed, .32-20, .38 Super, .357, 41, & .44 Mag, & .45 Colt Ruger Only loads. Might have missed one.
