I recently bought 3 boxes of "LOT - 2043 - HXP - 77" Greek Powder and Cartridge 30.06 surplus ammo. I put 40 shells through my rifle and now I'm reading that most surplus ammo should be considered corrosive. I cleaned my rifle after shooting but I didn't use anything other than Tetra Gun Copper Solvent and Hoppes. Anyone know if this Greek surplus ammo is "corrosive" and whether I need to do anything different?

I don't know whether there is any HXP that is corrosive, but currently HXP is the only surplus .30-06 sold by the CMP and their stock is not corrosive. Pretty good shooing, too.

If you are still in doubt, here is a way to checi any ammo. Pull the bullet and dump the powder. Take a small piece of steel plate, about 4"x4" or so, and sand till shinny. Lay the plate on the ground and put the muzzle of the barrel about 4" from the plate and fire the primer. If it starts to rust in less then 24 hours, it is corrosive.

I have no idea if it's corrosive. However, if in doubt, just clean it with Windex, especially the gas system, then clean and lube as usual. Is it NATO spec? Is one of the requirements of NATO spec ammo that it be non-corrosive?

It's non-corrosive and the brass is just about the equal of Lake City for reloading.

At the present time, it's about the only thing from Greece that is worth anything.....

Hope this helps.
