I just burned a bunch of M2 .30 cal ball ammo today. I think this is Greek made M1 ammo, bought it to get more clips for my new M1 rifle.

These .30 caliber ball M2 cartridges are headstamped HXP 71, came packed in M1 clips in eight pocket bandoleers.

Is this ammunition corrosive?

Thanks, Stevie.

I don't think so, but anytime you may think you have corrosive ammo, just flush out the barrel, and bolt face with hot water, dry, then clean as usual.

Worked great! Maybe just a bit dirty, but not too bad.

Shoots a bit lower than the Remington 150gr soft points I tried in my M1 the day after I bought it.

The point of aim thing might be me, I just got the M1 rifle, and had not fired one for a long time, and that was just a few shots. Also My shooting tabe washed away in the floods a few weeks back, so I just stand and shoot/plink.

Also seems like the peep sight aperature is small. Smaller than my M1A or Polytech M14S. Have not compared the holes yet, but have a lot less trouble aquiring the taret with the M14 sights.

No, HXP (Greek Pyrkal) is not corrosive. It's hella cheap too if you buy it from the CMP. Many of the gents there prefer it to the LC that was available.

Be very careful shooting any commercial loads in your M1 unless it has an adjustable gas plug. Here's a link to what Remington has to say about their current ammo: http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36892

Thanks strat81. I read the artical, and won't shoot too much of the Remington ammo, probably will not shoot it at all since I got me some Greek ammo!

I use the Remington 150's in my Rock Island 1903. Seems to kick a bit less than other .30-06 loads. I always have some of this stuff on hand so it was the first ammo to go through my "new"M1 rifle.

Any of the commercial soft-point ammo good for the M1?

As a footnote to using comercial ammo in military style semi-auto's. Years back, 1994 or 1995, about the time the hi-cap mag ban was enacted, I was out of 7.62 NATO ammo to shoot in my Polytech M14. I gave my wife money to get some 150gr. .308 ammo from the store so I would at least have a few rounds of ammo for my rifle. The wife comes home with some 150gr. .308 OK! Came back with some Remington round-nose 150's, power-points or some such brush busters!

No matter, I eventually got some more NATO spec ammunition. Got curious if the stuff would even run in my M14. Loaded the whole box into a mag and burned it through the Polytech without a hitch!! May as well have been Portugese ball ammo!

So who says Polytechs are a finicky cheap piece of crap!!!
