Is it me or do most gun dealers have no idea about the law

I know I'm new at this, but how come no one has any idea what's happening with local gun laws in NY State?

I went to one dealer in NYC of all places -- only because I work there -- and they didn't even have guns on the wall. They then asked me if I had a permit and wouldn't even show me anything when I said I didn't have one. Never mind the fact that you don't need one for long guns if not a city resident. I am a city resident (for now but not after next month) but how would they know that.

I then took a drive to Long Island where I was told Obama "changed everything" since he got elected when I started asking about tactical guns in NY City. Huh?

I then called another dealer looking for a MAK-90. And asked if they were illegal in NY state. I'm pretty sure they are despite not having enough "evil features" (bayo lug, folding stock etc) to ban them; they are banned by manufacturer: Norinco; unless owned prior to 1994. The caveat being a list of guns made on Oct. 1, 1993 that are OK, but I can't find it anywhere. I had hope a dealer knows about it, and that MAK-90 was on it (although now that I think about it -- yeah right!)

He said he would transfer anything I wanted and went into this rant about how that Mak-90 was overpriced and I should wait and the new AWB isn't going to matter even if you have one before they pass it; since they're talking about going door-to-door anyway collecting them. What?

How was that person going to do the transfer for me anyway?

All of the gun dealers I use locally are very well versed on the current law. However, when it comes to "future" laws, not so much.

They don't give you an IQ test when they issue your FFL.

Would you expect the local hardware clerk to know all the laws relating to your John Deere?

No, because a Federal license is not required to sell a John Deere. No, because the last time I checked, nobody went to jail for improperly selling a John Deere (unless it was stolen). No, because there is not a Federal agency that audits John Deere sales paperwork on a routine basis.

Do I expect my local hardware clerk, who works behind the Federally licensed gun counter at my hardware store, to know ALL of the laws that he is required to obey and to know exactly what and to whom he is allowed to sell and not sell to? Yes, absolutely I do because that is his job and it is required of him to keep himself out of jail.

I've noticed more than one employee at a gun store using "Obama" like a magic word that solves all problems and mints money.

Obama's going to take this off the market. Obama's going to tax that. We don't have what you want in stock because Obama, so you'd better buy what we have because Obama Obama Obama.

Barack Obama, or rather the fictional character "Obama!" lapped up by gullible minds, is the best thing that ever happened to the gun industry. I imagine they'll be invoking this mantra so long as the sucker birth rate holds steady at one per minute.

Federal, state and local laws DO govern the sales and operation of John Deeres.

Lots of luck with that.

The problem in NY and I live there is that a lot of the "laws" are really administrative rules that are decided by the NYC corp council and the Chief of police. If you go to the NYPD licensing Division and ask them a question you will get 2 different answers. For example I got 2 letters in my mailbox from them on the same day. One saying I was approved for a purchase and the other stating I was rejected. The rules change often and because they're not "penal law" no one is ever sure what's legal and not. Another example: last year lever guns that held more than 5 rounds were OK now this year they want all lever guns to be limited to 5 rounds. There was no announcements, no new law but if you want a new lever gun guess what?

Ain't been to WalMart lately, have ya?

I am not saying that they do know the laws. I am just saying that they should. I can look them up and read them and don't even do it for a living, I don't see how hard it would be for them to, since that is what they are earning living doing.
