Is it still a mil surp?

Recently I was at a local gun store and was excited to find out that they recently got in some old mil surplus rifles. (Where I live most guns sold are new and generally for hunting or tactical use). Well, I was saddened to realize that of the three guns they got, none of them were in their original configuration. First was a Enfield Mk 5 Jungle carbine. When I saw it however, it did not resemble the carbine at all. First, they who ever they got it from had removed the front sight/flash suppressor and put on a ramp sight. Secondly, they had managed to remove the metal band on the front and grind down the wood so the barrel looked longer. The other two rifles were original M1 Carbines but both had after market sights that looked like they had literally been glued on, and one had been spray painted grey (stock, barrel, everything). I was really disappointed because I love Mil Surp weapons but never manage to find any in good condition. How customized does a mil surp rifle have to be for you to not want it?

Well, you can usually heat up old glues and melt them, unless its a 2 part epoxy, like JB Weld. Myself, while I prefer non-bubba'd rifles, I also like fugly project guns. Do these rifles function? Are they cheap?

How customized does a mil surp rifle have to be for you to not want it?

I personally won't buy a Milsurp unless it's basically identical to one that would have been carried in the field.

If there were something particularly rare that I wanted and could not find one in original condition, then I might allow some Bubbafication to acquire said piece. That has not happened to me yet.

A milsurp will ALWAYS be a milsurp. It just may not be very desireable or collectable.
