I have a couple of Mosin carbines and have been thinking about getting another Mil-Surp but was looking for some recomendations. I like carbines, not really into the long rifles (like 91/30 Mosins...too long). I'd love to find a Finn M39 but are few and far between. I really like the looks of the Enfield jungle carbine but I hear there are accuracy problems with them. Was also considering the Yugo 24/47 8mm but I really don't know much about them so was wondering of someone could shed some light on those. I'd love a K31-ish gun if they made a short version of it. Any other suggestions?

If money is no object and you have a ton of time to locate an example, the CZ 33/40 mauser carbine and Swedish 94 carbine would be at the very top of my list.

You can still buy M39s from WG&A and you don't even need a C&R or FFL:

As far as (short) carbines, do you have an SKS?

The Jungle Carbines aren't inaccurate. They just kick like a mule and cause a nasty flinch. ;)

Um, let's see... there's also the FR-8. Looks almost as sexy as the JC and shoots cheap 7.62x51 surplus.

Try a MN M38

Mine is short, light, handy and a blast (literally) to shoot.

DM1333, I already own an M38, excellent condition, re-arsenaled, numbers matching. I pulled it out of it's stock and it currently resides in a Boyds walnut stock. Great gun (I love Mosins) but wanted something a little different.

Mauser K98k!!!!!!!!

8mm. . . . ammo can be had for about $70 for 900 rounds for Yugo '70s manuf. if you shop around.
'50s Romanian and Turk ammo can be had for about $40 for 900 rounds.
Accurate.
Most probably the strongest action ever built.

BYF43....I'm considering the Yugo 24/47. I really don't know much about those guns but aren't they the same thing as the German K98 Mauser? Just shorter barrel or something like that? I'm guessing they're the same Mauser action. Are they same manufacturer? Are parts interchangealbe? Do they take the same ammo (8mm is 8mm right?)

24/47 vs K98:
24/47 has a shorter receiver
They shoot the same ammo.
The rifles themselves are about the same length
Most of the parts are NOT interchangeable
24/47s were made by the Yugoslavians, K98s were made mainly by Germans but also by Czechs.

A 24/47 in good condition will be a good shooter.
A good K98 will be of higher quality than the 24/47, but a late war k98 will probably not be.

Kymasabe,

I'm not sure about the 24/47 other than what 'cracked' said.
I totally agree about the receiver being shorter. By how much? ??? I was never that interested in the 24/47, or other models of that type. One is the M48. Lots of them around. They just don't float my boat.
I guess my 'draw' to the K98k is that it is a beautiful rifle. Second is the history behind the rifle. Not that is was used by Germany, so much as the fact that they just simply have 'history' in their use. Just like my M1 Garand.
Both my 1st Mauser and my Garand were built in 1943, for example.

As for the quality of the latter year(s) K98k(s), that is true. The earlier ones will be of higher quality, but, they will (most all) be decent shooters.

There is sooooooooo much information about the K98k and Mauser(s) in general on the web and in print, that I won't even begin to profess being anywhere near an authority on them.
I highly suggest that you do a search on them. There are many forums, some of which are fabulous, others are good and others are, well. . .

A good friend got me interested in Mauser K98k rifles.
(He has over 20 of them!)
I now have two, and keep my eyes open for others.

Collecting Mauser(s) is a whole different world. Many actual manufacturers. Many years.
The Mauser action is without a doubt the most used/copied bolt action style in the world. The U.S. even licensed the action (design) from the Mauser brothers when Springfield designed the '03 Springfield!
The action designed by Mauser is arguably the strongest action in the world, too.

C'mon in. The water's fine!!!
The 8mm is a real nice round, too!
