Is it worth modifying a FEG Hi Power?

It was in pretty good shape. The finish wasn't bad but I really disliked how every fingerprint and smudge stood out so badly. Made it look really sloppy unless I had just wiped it down and not touched it again. The smooth front and rear straps were too slick for my liking as well, and even more so for my wife who has tiny hands.

Got everything done and back together. Definitely fun and a good experience. Although the results weren't as good as I had hoped for I still think it looks better than before. For some reason different pieces came out with different colorations. Most of the smaller bits (safety, etc) came out nearly black while the frame is a medium gray and the slide a dark gray. The temp and time dunked were the same for all (185° for 15min) and all showed no more signs of bubbling when removed.

Looks like you did a great job. The good thing about those phosphate type finishes is they'll hold a heck of a lot of oil but remain "dry".. I've got one that I sweat on daily with no problems.

I think it.........

..........came out well. Yours is the same model as mine with the modified slide stop and extended safety. It was FEGs second release of their High Power with their particular improvements (according to JayPees blogspot on High Power clones). Mine also came with the high gloss blue. Gonna keep it that way. That was why I bought mine. Due to the current administrations possibility of getting back in, I wanted at least one hi-cap pistol in my stable. But I wanted it to be a good ole' fashioned shiny blued and wood firearm. Kinda into the classic look. Mine is the same as yours was.

I often wonder if the Sprinco buffer kit would work on ours? According to JayPees blog, our parts should be interchangeable with a true High Power except for the slide stop, frame and slide. The buffer would be nice for quicker follow-ups. I keep looking at my spring guide and keep comparing it to parts pictures on the 'net and can swear that they are the same. I'm just not making enough disposable income these days(construction worker) to order a true HP spring guide to compare. Maybe my gunsmith knows. I know he specializes in Browning stuff. I know his specialty is primarily restoring Browning shotguns, but he may do more. The subject never came up about Browning handguns.

I'm laid off now, so I'll try to see him and get back to you on that. Thinking about seeing him about disconnecting that mag safety anyway to smooth the trigger. Haven't made up my mind about that. Yea, the trigger is gritty, but the pull isn't bad and I'm getting used to it. And yea again, I saw the vids and could probably do it myself. But man, I'd had to to take the chance on ruining that shiny blue that made me buy it to begin with.

Of course now that I have one, I want another! I'm already saving for one of the surplus pistols from Cole Distributing. I hope you love yours as much as I do mine! Especially with all you put into it. Yours came out great! Nice work!

Sorry for the long reply.

The recoil spring guide is exactly the same, I just swapped a new one in mine yesterday and it fits perfect.

It was disconnected when I traded for it a while back. Trigger is great without it, smooth and crisp. I installed a stronger trigger spring to get a better trigger reset since I was having occasional issues with that. Mags drop free even when empty which is a big plus to me.

My original mags drop free......

.....but the MecGars(fifteen rounders) that I later purchased are slower. But then again, those are recent purchases, within the last month. I've only had my pistol for three months. So some wear might be required. The original KRDs drop right out. Even if I don't get the Sprinco kit (kinda pricey!), I might go with a Wolff spring upgrade. An 18.5 recoil spring is suggested even if you don't shoot +Ps in it. I'm planning on Federal 115 FMJs for target and training and Federal Classic JHPs for SD as per Stephen Camp in High Powers and Handguns. Kinda old school but in looking up the ballistics I think it's pretty sufficient for our needs. Thanks for the heads up on the mag disconnect and the guide rod. I do appreciate it. Especially the guide rod. Now the Sprinco kit is definitely in the running.

The original had the ball bearing (the large one that keeps the spring inside the guide) pop out the last time I had it at the range. I put it back together but figured for the relatively cheap price getting a new one couldn't hurt.

Without having access.........

...........to mine at this hour, I think I know what you are talking about from cleaning mine. So far mine has run good so I haven't felt the need to replace or fix anything yet, But then again I probably only have about 300 rounds down the pipe. We're only still getting acquainted so to speak. A little more time will tell. I do have some previous experience with another FEG firearm and found them to be of a very good quality. I once had a FEG SMC-380. Basically a PPK clone (FEG was big on clones, weren't they?). Great little pistola but the slide bite was so bad that I couldn't get more than 20 rounds out before the web of my hand turned to hamburger. Now I wished I kept it just to have a matched set, Oh well, one never knows. But I also hate to have a firearm that I can't shoot.
