my brother said that one of his buddies told him that obama is trying to have every gun owner in america register their guns at $25 a pop. i did a quick google search and really couldn't find anything definate. can anyone elaborate on this a little? thanks

at 80+ guns it would cost me both arms and one leg.

I've only ever heard rumors of this.

My prediction for such an effort is....epic fail.

I suppose he can try, but there is no way he will get that done.

What do you mean 'RE- register' anyway. Unless you live in Ny or some place like Ny none of your guns are registered in the first place.

I live in NH and not one gun of mine is registered or ever has been registered, much less will ever be registered.

If the thinking is the 4473 form to pass NICS, NICS doesn't get make, model and serial number, just the FFL does and he is the only one who knows what make model and serial number went too.

NICS knows you bought a long gun, and hand gun (revolver) or pistol (semi auto) and any combinations of the above terms..

So this is like if i said i bought a pistol last week now guess what it was?

How I KNOW this is I have been a gun store clerk. I have made many NICS calls in my past.

Rumors abound about what BHO will or will not do. I would not get excited until a more reliable source confirms this, no offense to a friend of a friend meant.

I think it was registering your guns that are not currently registered to you. Plus it was only an idea floating around in commitee not law not on the books not even designated to be voted on.

So far just about everything said about what Obama will do about guns is rumors. The only thing I have seen for sure is he wants to reinstate the awb.

I certainly hope so. That means none of my guns are registered to me. It would be no big deal since I only have $50 worth of guns now. I won't mention the potential $1950 worth of guns that are not registered to me.

Where does this crap come from and who the hell starts it?

It starts like this:

"I heard the new AG is going to make ammo manufacturers use quick-degrading primers so that the ammo won't be any good after 4 years".

Just say that out loud in a gun store and see how long it takes for it to come back to you.

I heard the registration was $25 yearly. That could have added up fast for me.

Sadly, there was that boating accident last month... :(

The Twilight Zone covered this sort of agitation quite well with Then Monsters are Due on Maple Street.

Well worth the watch!:D

You mean this isn't true?? I've been buying primers like crazy ever since I heard some guy in the gun aisle say it out loud. Although I heard it alittle different. It wasn't the AG it was the Dept. of the Interior. That they were trying to change the formula so that the primers wouldn't contain lead in them because "it will be more environmentally friendly". And I heard that it wasn't 4 yrs but 2 yrs shelf life since the components used weren't as stable as lead in keeping the primers viable. Maybe it was a rumor, but it at least gave me an excuse to use on the wife to stock up more!

So Macmac,
You're telling me that every gun Ive bought at the local shops and WalMart is unregistered? They dont know what the serial is? They dont know the make and model?

Interesting.

I don't know about that. I'm keeping my tin foil hat on for that claim. I can't believe that the Fed Govt. doesn't "know" what we have in our homes. From the bullets that we buy with our credit cards to the NICS forms we fill out when we purchase a firearm, I think the Govt. has the ability to (should any regime decide to) track down all firearms and munitions storages. We buy reloading components online with credit cards or even in the store, and the government "can't" trace all of this stuff back to us?? I'm not so sure about that. The only thing keeping them from actually doing it is organizations like the NRA that is watchdog for that sort of scheme and active citizens that would raise cain if the government did start doing this. I think our government is more resourceful than many of us give credit for. IF(that's a big if) the government did decide to start knocking on doors to confiscate arms, I think alot of us would be surprised in what methods would be used to track firearms and munitions purchases. (credit cards, bill of sales, NICS forms, Gunsmith reciepts, etc...) I just don't put it past them to do something like this.:uhoh:

This is the big reason why alot of guys, also distrustful, prefer to get "unpapered" firearms. (private transactions, no paperwork)

If the shops were compelled to send in make, model and serial # to the feds on every purchase, somebody working in the shops would have said so by now.

But the feds don't need that level of detail to do a 'national seizure', only the record of the NICS call. Handgun, rifle, shotgun? They'll know everytime you buy one. That's all they need.

But they're not registered by make/model/number.

I have heard it all by now.. a million $ mandatory insurance policy, all owners must pass CC - like exam even if they don't plan to carry, etc etc. They're just ideas kicking around in the white house.. the recent DOD adventure with the spent brass will be clarifying to the white house on how tough it's going to be to crack down on guns like the brits and aussies did.

cold dead hands, etc. :)

Re-register our guns?

In Pennsylvania where I live we don't have to register them the first time, let alone re-register them.

I don't put anything past Obama..... BUT, I really don't see him pushing major anti-2A legislation unless/until he gets re-elected. He wants to have a second term..... and quite frankly, between all of the people rushing out and buying guns and the states that have been one after the other, writing up and voting on legislation to protect states from having to follow any further infringements on the 2A, unless Obama is stupid (which he's not, evil-yes, but stupid-no) he will not make any ballsy moves until he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected. It would be political suicide for him to pursue anything like this now.
