Is the Colt Python worth the $?

You used to be able to easily buy Colt Troopers in 22 for that $380 in about the same condition (just a few years back). Times change.

Added: Then again, you could buy Pythons for $300-$350 new in the mid-1970's and around $450-$500 in the mid-80's.

Actually i had a Dan Wesson 15v-2 (almost sure that was the model) w/ 6" barrel and sold it for the ruger gp100. The action & trigger on the Dan was very stiff but the accuracy was there. If i ever find a Dan Wesson pistol pack at a good price I may jump on it.

Since I shoot my revolvers DA only I consider the Python inferior to the Smith L frames.

While I shoot L and N frame smiths in competition, it's not because that have a better than my python. Be nice if they did.

The Python is my favorite revolver by far.

No, if you want a revolver to shoot. Smith's 686SSR is probably more accurate and certainly more durable for a lot less money. If you want a safe queen to admire and show off to friends then it's worth it for bragging rights. I don't know if the Python or the Colt 1911 is the most over-hyped handgun in history. But it's close.

While I certainly can't speak for others, I shoot my Python on a regular basis. Once a gun has been shot, it is no longer new and if you are careful they will stay in nice condition.

All that being said, just because I have a particular gun doesn't mean I feel I have to shoot it. I have a couple of low number Springfield 1903 rifles that I won't shoot, but I still enjoy them for their historical significance.

This is the one I mentioned in my earlier post, made in '64 and no safe queen:

I usually put these Herrets Shooting Stars on it for range work.
