Is the Ruger P89 safe with the decocker lever up?

My knowledge of semi auto handguns is quite limited so please bear with me. I just traded for a Ruger P89 and it has a decocker that apparently acts as a safety too. I'm wondering if the gun is safe to carry with the decocker off/lever up? Being used to revolvers it would be nice if this is the case.

I have another question. I see that there are separate versions of the P89. One says it is a decocker, the P89dc, but what is the other one? Does the other P89 version not have a decocker and just a regular safety or?

The recommended method of carrying one would be to decock the pistol by pushing the lever down and then pushing it back up to take the safety off. With the hammer down, the first shot is like a revolver, pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and fires it. It is perfectly safe to carry it in this method because it is just like carrying a revolver. :)

Warnerwh,

Ruger made 3 models of the P89. Decocker, DA/SA with Safety, and the DAO (Double Action Only). I have the DA/SA. If it is a Decocker model...the Safety will spring back up after pushing it down (after safely dropping the hammer) you are now in a Double Action Mode. It is always ready to fire if it has a round chambered...either DA or SA (hammer back).

As has been stated in this forum...very under rated pistol (P series in general). I know I can truely depend on it to go bang every time.

Sure it is. I carry S&W old-style pistols with their slide-mounted safeties off, only using them as decockers and pushing them back up before shooting. The motion to take the safety off on the draw is cumbersome. There is still a firing pin block if the gun is dropped.

My only experience with a Ruger P series pistol was a P90 and it jammed once per every two or three mags. Any idea on why?

Last round jams = magazine spring. I replaced the guts of mine with Wilson 7 rds springs & followers. The devel type followers were also gouging up the frame. :fire:

Could be the extractor's too tight.

Thank you guys for the info. I feel like I am in a strange town having a semi auto pistol as I never considered them being worthy compared to a revolver. They are a different ball game than revolvers though and I am enjoying learning about them. I surprise myself at my ignorance with semi autos being as I have been an avid shooter most of my life.

The decocker lever on the Ruger P-89DC is spring loaded and will automatically return to the up position when released. If yours does do so it is broken and needs repair.

Or it's just the decocker model and doesn't have a safety.

My P89 will stovepipe sometimes when I use Magtech ammo. better quality ammo and handloads never FTE in mine. A simple change of cartridge might help.
