I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the tapco 30rd AK mag.

I'm starting to get into converting Saiga's and I'm looking for:

- good polymer mags
- good US made mags

I've got plenty of bulgies, german, russian, and S. Korean mags now I'm looking for some polymers. Tapco is nice because of 622r compliance but my franken AK's don't need to worry about that.

I love saigas and have converted a handful of them. I would suggest that you don't have 922r compliance rely on US made mags. It is easier and often more economical given the price of other AK mags to ensure that it is compliant even with foreign mags.

Is there any particular reason that you want polymer over steel mags?

I love pmags? The tapco videos seem impressive. THey run their mags over with a truck. I know they aren't pmags but I'm hoping they are still good.

See attached pics.

I have a WASR-10 with several of the poly Tapco mags along with the steel ones. I would grab the Tapco one 1st if I was ever in a situation. They are very reliable, feed flawless, much lighter, and are made solid as can get out of polymer.

I have heard of issues of dropping them on their feed lips and the lips cracking. I also heard that TAPCO has addressed the issue and if this happens to your mags you send them in to TAPCO and they will replace them.

Depends on how far you're going to convert your Saiga. Saigas don't come with a bullet guide installed. That means that standard AK mags won't feed properly unless you install one. If you're willing to just use Saiga mags, go Surefire. Surefires are positively excellent. High-quality, reliable, fair-priced, US-made. Heck, even if you have to remove the feed lip to use them with a bullet guide, I'd recommend them instead.

Are you sure they're US made? I was under the impression that they were only "US modified" and didn't count as compliance parts.

I have two tapco mags for my AK. No problems so far but then again I have only put about 30rds. through each.

I believe there are two versions that exist. The latter (and I'm inclined to say more common) version is in fact US made.

The polymer mags are wholly US-made. They did modify a few steel foreign magazines at first (fairly rare), but their polymer ones are entirely American. I've got two of them, a 5-round and a 30-round. Both have USA stamped on the 3 critical components. The only people who have ever complained about ANY variety of Surefire mags are the Saiga .410 users, who complain because they don't work for the exotic metal-hulled Russian .410 rounds. Everyone else reports 100% functionality with them.

This may not be the right place to mention this but has anyone here read P.O. Ackleys Handbook for shooters and reloaders volume 2? I remember when Jim Zumbo talked about how no real sportsman would own an assault rifle and they had no place in sport shooting/hunting. If you read Page 121 in Ackley's book volume 2 you see(and I quote) no real sportsman could be interested in such a rifle. It could only be of interest to grown up sportsman with adolescent tendencies like those who will stand in front of a mirror practicing quick draw, imagining that they are Jesse James, etc. This kind of individual is one of the main contributers to the cause of the anti-gun Legislators. I'm not kidding, this is what he said. So how many gun-haters have seen things like this over the years and made up their minds about these kinds of guns. I for one am throwing my book out and will never again use anything ACKLEY. I only wish I could have found this while the man was still alive so I could have told him myself. Sorry for interfering with the forum, I am just so irritated that they are trying to take away my guns and someone who was influential was so narrow minded. Kind of like using a lever-action and bad-mouthing a bolt action. Dave

tapco

my ak came with their mag and furniture...it works fine...the problem that i did run into was trying a metal one....i had to file off the mag catch so ALL would work....gpr

I have seen complaints about the .308 Saiga Surefire mags over at Saiga12.com. Myself, I have three of them and haven't had any problems.

Surefire warranties all their mags for 5 years, and they almost always work right out of the box and keep working. Never heard of one breaking after the fact. If you get a bad one, they will fix it.

Compare this to ProMag that has a lifetime warranty and you have to take advantage of it every few weeks.
