From what I understand the .45 LC bullet has a diameter of .452 while the Casull is of .454 diameter. Many Casull guns either have a special cylinder for .45 Colt or let you shoot .45 Colt out of the same cylinder as the .454. Does this lead to accuracy problems?

I know that alot of people complain about poor accuracy when shooting their 9mm's (.355") out of their .38 special/.357 (.357") Ruger Blackhawk revolvers with the conversion cylinder.

Thinking about it myself it seems like the bullet would have a ping pong effect off of the walls of the barrel.

Anybody have opinions on this?

I want a good .45 Colt revolver, but I'd also like to have the option of shooting .454 Casull.

The .454 is actually .452, but that in itself is up to each individual gun. Rather than worrying about what the caliber designation says, slug the barrel and chambers. Use dead soft lead so it doesn't have any springback. The chamber throats should be about .001"-.002" larger than that of the barrel. Then you cast your bullets a little larger than that (try different sizes) to find the best fit. I've known quite a few guys to get the best accuracy out of their .45 Colts by casting them at .454" and leaving them that way, and still other guns require .451" including the .454 Casulls. the number in the moniker isn't really accurate, in this case.

The jump due to the shorter case shoudn't creat a big accuracy problem. Be sure that each cylinder is perfectly lined up with the bore if purchasing a gun.

Hasn't been my experience. Last summer, I had an opportunity to shoot a Ruger Super Redhawk that was just scary accurate using the LC rounds...I think it was from relief knowing I didn't have to shoot many of the owner's really HOT 454 casull rounds. :what:

My SRH is a tack driver with my 45 colt cast bullets.

But a whole lot more fun with 300 grainers over H110:D

JJMorgan, I agree. In fact, with the power you can get out of a .45 Colt in a Ruger or FA, most folks would be wasting their money with the .454.

really Steve........well, for one thing you can shoot 45 colt out of a 454 casull, and if you only had the 45 colt you couldn't shoot the 454 ......the 454 is much more versatile.....you can also download a 454 using different powders other than WW 296 or H110 like AA9 or VV110...........When you start comparing the 454 with a 260 gr. bullet at 1800-1900 fps, sometimes 2000 fps, the 45 colt doesn't even compare, even with 300 gr. bullets, the 454 wins hands down.........and it should win......it was made to win.....the costs are more of course.......

I shoot .45 Colt through my Super RedHawk many times - cheaper to shoot and the ranges don't stop when I pull the trigger. Guess the boom is louder than their bangs.....:D

I own a 6 1/2 in Taurus Raging Bull in 454. This revolver is one of the most accurate I have shot with both 45LC and 454.
Shooting the 45LC is a blast, it feels like a mild .38. And if you load your own the 45LC can really perform. I would recommend the Raging Bull to anyone they are very nice revolvers. Just dont forget your ear plugs.
I took mine bear hunting and tried to get off a quick shot , I didnt think I had time to put my earplugs in. BIG MISTAKE, that will never happen again.

P.S. I missed and couldnt recover to take another shot in time.

jem375, dont' do that to me, I don't appreciate it. I've owned a .454 and I sold it. Realistically, you don't need the power in North America. That's why its gone. And that was my point.
