I was wondering if it was possible and safe to fire .45 acp cartridges in a revolver chambered for .45 colt or .454 casull. I remember hearing somewhere that the .45 acp uses bullets of the same diameter as the revolver cartridges.

Do you need a new cylinder, because of the.45 acp having a different case width. I think the .45 acp has a slight taper, a lot less than the the 9mm, but I think it still has one.

I believe there is a gunsmith who will modify a CAsull revolver cylinder to shoot all three but the .45 ACP requires a moon clip. Sorry I can't fond the link.

In some revolvers, the .45ACP headspaces on the rim via the moonclip, similar in effect to the rim of the .45AR equivalent.
My cut-back Webley Mk VI shoots very well that way, and the chamber ledge is a mile away from the case mouth.
I use it to wow young range officers at USPSA matches. It's hilarious.

There are now some moon clip modifications that will allow use of clips and still let the original rimmed cartridge to be fired, but the old guns like the Webley conversions cannot use the original ammo once the cylinder has been cut down to take .45 ACP with moon clips.

The problem is that when the clip is used for case support, not just fast reloading, there is a lot of "spring" and erratic primer ignition which results in poor accuracy.

If you want to shoot .45 ACP out of a revolver, either get one made for that cartridge and clips, or buy something like a Ruger SA convertible, with dual cylinders. (The SA has no extraction problems, of course, using an ejector rod.)

2 cylinders

My older Cimarron 1873 SAA has two interchangeable cylinders, .45 Colt and .45 ACP for cheaper plinking and practice.

I think they also offfer one for .357 and .38 special.

I think Ruger has a dual cylinder Vaquero too.

I've heard tell of that, but all the lc/acp convertibles I've ever seen are Blackhawks. Going adjustable sight like the Blackhawk might be a good idea since POI may vary a bit depending on the cartridge. It will vary a lot if you load .45 colt hot and .45acp not.
