I get so frustrated! Here I am a long time firearm owner, cherisher, cleaner, lover, etc, and I STILL can't figure out all the reasons why every firearm cleaning kit I get seems to have another thread size preventing me from using a brush or mop that I already own. I am in industrial mechanics by trade, so I understand thread sizes etc. I own at least parts of 10 or 12 kits and enough to surely have what I need for the occasion. IS there some sort of rule that firearm cleaning supplies follow? Is it a different thread size for each cleaning kit for rifles, shotguns, black powder, pistols, etc? Am I just naïve and haven't been enlightened yet?

End of rant.

You summed up my frustrations quite well. I quit buying cleaning kits though. I bout a bunch of brushes at harbor freight and drag them through the barrel with a shoestring. Only gun it's difficult on is the marlin lever gun, everything else comes apart easy. My kit came with brass and plastic so they come pretty clean.

I have found Montana Express, Gunslick, Kleen-bore and Dewey all use the same threads. I buy products from these companies because they are compatible with each other.

The problem is, there is no standardization.

Used to be American gun cleaning kits used standard threads such as 8-32 for rifles & handguns, and 5/16"x27 for shotgun.

Except for GI military rods, which use 8-36 threads.

Then you got English Parker-hale rods which use something else, English?
And Dewey rods that use something else entirely (.22 - 6.5mm use 8-36. .270 -.50 cal use 12-28)
But they are more then happy to sell you a whole assortment of thread adapters to fit anything!

Then the .17 & .20 cal rifles came along, and had to have an even smaller rod, and thread to fit in the tiny holes. So American rods had to be made 5-?? something?

Then to further complicate matters even WAY Worse?

In the last 10 years or so, all the big box stores are selling 'One kit cleans everything' kits.
And they are made in China or some third world country.
And use obscure Metric threads!

Don't buy those kits in the fancy soft wood boxes at Cabalas or Walmart if you ever want to find a brush again that's fits the rods!!!!!!

You need a set of adapters.I bought a set at a gun show 20 yrs ago.It allows me to mix and match between Outers,Hoppes and KleenBore.I tought these three companies standardized on the Kleen Bore thread size about 20 yrs. ago.
