A gun shop across the border in Colorado has half a dozen law enforcement Sig 220 trade ins. A friend bought the pick of the litter. The remaining pistols, in his words, vary in condition from good to poor.

Would it be considered a straw purchase if he goes to the shop, picks the best remaining gun, pays for it and shipping with my cash, provides the FFL of my local dealer?

We haven't determined if the gun shop would allow this. The other option is for him to pick the gun, ask the dealer to hold it, and I give the dealer a credit card number over the phone and email the FFL.

Or I can work directly with the shop and ask them to pick one. My friend said one of the pistols was in bad shape. I don't want to end up with that one, or one with a cracked frame, and I'd rather not make the 150 mile round trip because the gun would have to be shipped to my FFL guy anyway.

Thanks for your opinions.

As long as you fill out a 4473 with your dealer, it's not a straw purchase.

Your friend shouldn't be filling out a 4473 for your gun anyway-- he should pick it out, pay for it, and have it shipped to your FFL.

nope,it would be a legal dealer to dealer xfer.why not just send the dealer a postal money order or use a credit card and have him ship it to your dealer, after you provide dealers ffl.if you were ex-military or cop,you can go directly to sig for police prices and ship to your local dealer

check cdnnsports.com also for used p220s

drsmfd, Yeah, that's the plan. He would not fill out a 4473, just make the payment and provide a copy my dealer's FFL.

dprice. That's an option. I'm ex-military, not law enforcement. These are used, made in Germany, and don't have the rail. I'd prefer these to the new ones. I'll check out the military prices, though. I don't know if 2 years in the Army in 1969-70 will satisfy the requirement?

Since the guns are used, I'd like a gun guy to pick the best one.

The bold option is the way to go. Having him hand the dealer the cash and shipping it would probably be OK, but it still smells like a straw purchase even if it isn't one. With the credit card option, there's no question who the gun is for.
