I bought a Proshot AR-15 cleaning kit, and everything in it looks awesome except for maybe the coated steel cleaning rod. All it says is that it's "Coyote Coated," being that it is a coyote brown color. Is a coated steel cleaning rod okay? I've always been told steel cleaning rods are a no-go, for obvious reasons. Should I ditch it and go for a brass or nylon coated rod?

Thanks.

I like all of the pro shot stuff that I have purchased. I doubt that they put out a junk item of any kind. They are not cheap. I like that they use the same thread for rod connection and cleaning attachment connection. I bought a 3 piece 22+ rod kit that I can attach a different device to each section when I need to. I bought the rod because I forgot to dry swab my long rifles after.... well, I always swab prior to going to shoot after cleaning after the previous outing. Cheap brands of multi-sectioned rod kits don't have the same threads throughout. Pro shot jags are marked with the caliber. The pistol range I shot at most of the time has their products, most anyway.

All of my cleaning rods are steel...they are more durable and they don't embed grit like aluminum can. I always use a bore guide and brass jag so the rod itself shouldn't really be contacting the rifling significantly. The only coated rod I have tried, the coating started flaking off fairly quickly so I have generally avoided them. Newer coatings may have improved though.

Same here.

All I use are un-coated Stainless Steel rods.

I doubt the coating will make much difference.

Steel one-piece rods are the best you can get for being kind to the bore.

I won't use steel without a bore guide so I don't have steel rods that aren't wrapped or coated to avoid any damage to the crown.
