Never mind, Bartholomew. You are right, there is absolutely no connection between an automatic weapon ban in 1986 (supported by the NRA, no less) and the semiautomatic weapon bans in 1992 and 1994.
Of course there is a connection; what I keep asking you though is why do you think the machinegun ban wouldn't have happened later if it had been stopped in 1986? You keep pointing out a progressive pattern of increasing gun control as your evidence; but it seems to me that this makes my point. Even if the NRA had killed the bill in order to dodge the poison pill inserted by the New Jersey Rep., the ban would still have likely been passed in 1992 or 1994. The only difference would be that we would have no FOPA; but still have the ban.
