It's abnormal to carry a weapon with you in your homestate and it's even more abnormal to plan your vacation around being able to carry a weapon.
Doesn't mean it's foolish though.
It'd be flat out insane to spend time and money on equipment, training and licensing in your home state and leave all that behind assuming that your family would be safe while traveling. You're probably at MORE risk while traveling seeing as how it's easier to spot a travler for criminals (money, cameras, etc on you) -- and you have pretty much no guarantee that you'll be in the best neighborhoods all the time.
You have no real idea of where you're going and what to look for, you have nobody to call when you get a flat tire, and you probably have nowhere to run 100% of the time.
