It just might be. The new Ruger LC9 is an 8 shot, 17 ounce, .90" thick 9mm that looks like a big brother to the LCP .380. And it has a manual safety. I like Rugers and I am definitely intrigued.

It is about the same size as the Kel Tec PF9. It is really to big for pocket carry unless you are a baggy pants rapper.

DAO with a manual safety confuses (and would irritate) me a bit.

I believe the Kahr PM-9 is the same "slim"ness and a bit smaller, though

Great chart there 9mmepiphany. Looks like there's a wide selection of slim mini-9s, (pardon the pun). ;)

Does the new Ruger bring anything new to the table? Looks to me like it just became mediocre without even one sale.

What we need is that new gun that actually offers something different. The new Sig may be the most innovative in that it has an adjustable grip.

What I really want is;
Kahr's (3.6" barrel), and size with a,
Hammer and
a DA/SA trigger and
Adjustable grips and a
Built in laser ala the S&W Bodyguard that
Weighs in at about 18 ounces.

I can dream, can't I?

While i think Ruger makes a quality product id expect some initial bugs the first year even if people say its just an "Overgrown" LCP or a "PF9" clone as it reality it may share some design keys it still is designed different with the safety and possibly more things than that.

People judge Ruger badly for recalls on new products, But id rather have that than what Glock does which is ignore it and quietly make the change like no one will notice.

In reality we did need more options in the micro 9mm offerings, But it would be better if it was smaller. I really like the comparison chart 9mmepiphany posted showing all the competitors side by side.

I can say right now the Kahr CW9 is gonna be hard for the Ruger to even come close to beating, Trigger pull and reliability is well above average in that gun. And at $400 a very good deal.
I think the Sig P290 will be a competitor to the Kahr PM9 not the LC9 or CW9. And that puts a LARGE amount of pressure on Sig to beat the PM/MK line as it is one sweet gun and even tho expensive its worth every penny.

So imo if you really like Ruger and and a so-so trigger don't bother you the LC9 may be for you, But id suggest the CW9 if you want a more refined gun with no chances of recalls and well proven reliability.

I find the PF9 crude and unrefined, But its easy to say that since i never bought one.
Its a $250 gun and looks like it, But it has a strong following.

The Taurus 709 is a more refined than the PF9 but for $100 more it should be, I think this gun will be another big competitor to the LC9 and it may hurt sales of the PT709 since Ruger has a much better reputation over Taurus with many seasoned gun owners.

I find the PPS 9 as a a gun that should soon be retired and discontinued and have a new refined replacement released. I have owned one and its just an odd gun imo.
The trigger was like a roller coaster and recoil much more than what it should have been for a gun its size and weight.

I think i covered all the guns as best i can with personal knowledge and some from internet reviews.

I think Ruger will lose more potential buyers than they will gain with that ski ramp of a chamber indicator, manual safety and magazine disconnect.
Indicator - one more thing to snag, not good. Peekaboo windows while more low-tech are vastly superior.
Manual safety - folks say just don't turn it on. That is all well and good, until or if it turns itself on in your pocket. You got an extra second or so in a gun fight to figure out what happened and flick it off?
Magazine disconnect - the reason I do not own a pps (backstrap safety), have you ever dropped a mag while firing on accident? Instant 9mm derringer. Not a good thing.

I am a ruger fan by the way, I have several but unless this thing has a para lda/pda trigger I think it will in most part undersell their expectations. That is unless there are more brand-name band-wagoners then we would all think.

P.S. kahr got the design right, light dao, single stack, no extra safeties or useless bells and whistles and it is way better looking. I own a PF9 and a cw9 may be on the radar unlews glock finally gets off their arse and makes the single stack and carbine. I will also be watching the p290 over the next year too. It fould be the frontrunner if there is a good mix of quality and value (ie well made/functioning without being too highly priced).

P.P.S. nice chart 9mmepiphany. I did not realize how this was exactly the size of a cw9 until seeing it that way. At least my PF9 weighs and costs less. Not sure anyone will beat it soon in price/size/weight anytime soon.

I personally hope it and the sig are successful. Competition and options are a good thing. :)

Rohrbaugh fits in the realm as well...... ;)

As for Ruger, wait till after the recall, then get one of you want

I found mine months ago in the form of a PM9. The only DAO trigger that I've used that was better was the LDA on a Para 1911. It's easy to conceal, accurate and very dependable.

I was really excited about the LC9 when I heard about it...until... I found out it has a manual safety and a mag disconnect. DEAL BREAKERS. Bummer too as I think there is a place in my EDC lineup for a single stack 9mm that isnt a Kahr or a Keltec.

The good thing is that this will get some of the other manufs into making one. I have heard rumors from pretty reliable sources that say S&W is in development on one. Hopefully it will be part of the M&P family. I like millions of others wish Glock would come out with one, but hey they will only be about a decade behind all the other progressive manufs out there and lag behind the times. Sad part is that I love and EDC my Glocks, just wish they were a bit more forward thinking and aggressive in producing products that respond to their customers desires!

The best overall pistol in slim, sub compact 9's is the CW9. Shooters are realizing this. Just notice the continually increasing threads inquiring about them and increasing numbers of people recommending them. Its understandable because you get an awesome trigger, good fit and finish, lighter weight than most of the competition, excellent accuracy (some say as accurate as their duty size guns), decent sights and solid reliability all at a budget friendly price. They could raise the msrp $50-$100 and they'd still sell well.

As of now, the biggest competition to the CW9 is the PF9. It's lighter and cheaper. But with that, it isn't friendly on long range sessions, has a below average trigger and below average fit and finish. One thing I love about kel tec is their willingness to test the market with different firearms. I just wish their fit and finish was better.

The LC9 will probably take a sizeable chunk of market share but Ruger dropped the ball with the external safety(pointless on a DAO gun) and magazine safety. I mean during a struggle, the safety can be bumped into "safe" or the mag release button pressed. In this situation, the person defending themself is left with a 18oz blunt object.

I trust Rugers more than Kahrs, where reliability is concerned.

Based on what?

Both CW9s I've owned have been 100% flawless in a combined 1500 rounds, even during the 200 round break-in. One member here, jocko, has some 10,000 rounds through his Kahr, with no problems. People seem to remember the reliability problems Kahr had some 15 years ago.

If you live in affluent neighborhood and do not frequent unsavory areas during your daily activities it might not be a bad choice. If otherwise I would look at Glock 26 instead.

Has anyone actually shot (or even held) one?

One of the things I enjoy is reading opinions from posters who have no direct experience with the firearm in question. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it does make for some good reading.

I purchased a KTP11 about 12 years ago when people had never heard of them - but said they were crap. It was a handful to shoot but gave me 12 years of flawless use until I sold it last year. I had an LCP that ran flawlessly for over a year until I decided that I wanted a little more horsepower. I've been searching for a PF9 but can't find them. I looked into the CW9 and PM9 but could not locate one - plus I've read reports from actual Kahr users who state the gun can be finicky. Don't trust Taurus and have yet to read anything about the Sig other than "coming soon". My XD40SC is too large for summer carry.

I'm giving Ruger the benefit of doubt - yes they had a recall on each of their last models - but I believe so have many of the other main firearm manufacturers (Sig, Walther et. al.). I have owned a number of Ruger firearms in the past and have never been disappointed with them. IMHO the LC9 could be a great CCW given its size, caliber, and Ruger's CS reputation. The external safety doesnt bother me, and I'll bet neither of the other legal goodies will. I have one on order and will post a range report as soon as I try it out.

I don't see anything worth trading my CW9 or PM9 for, but it looks decent based on specs alone. I was surprised to see the new Ruger wasn't PM9 sized. That would have been more worthwhile in my opinion.

The PM9 is basically LCP/Bodyguard 380 sized but with a 9mm chamber. It seems bigger until you hold them side by side. It's just a hair wider.

If the new Ruger is CW9 sized, it's a significant difference.

I have to agree. I see two winners on that chart; the PF9 and CW9. PF9 gets the nod for price while CW9 has a heck of a long barrel for its length!

As a happy owner of two Rugers and one Kel Tec, I have to say the LC9 does not tempt me, but I may look at a CW9 eventually...
