Stopped in at a local gun shop on the way to the range today. I was doing my usual perusal of the milsurp rifle rack when I saw it. At first I was very excited. Then I saw the price tag. I was so shocked I didn't really even check it out. Although, my initial impression was very positive.

Have these rifles gone up that much in price? I have been wanting one for a while and never see them at the gun shows I frequent. Have any of my fellow board members seen any for sale lately? I may be able to work out a better price, but it would still be expensive. I was hoping to find one in the 200.00 to 250.00 range.

My 2A1 (1968 vintage) "Station Rifle" cost me $130, six months a go. It had and has issues i need to correct but is accurate with the issue sights on it. I may put a scout mount on it.

In the past 6 months I've gotten a good one for $175 and a very good one for $225, both on auction sites. I saw a very good one at a show for about $250. Over $300 is too high. Keep looking.

My 2A1 cost me $200, came in jungle carbine configuration, and shoots nicely at 100 yards. I'm very happy with it and would have paid more.

I had some interest in an elder bolt-action .30WCF Savage recently at an auction site. Nice condition, nice gun. Average price goes for 200-225 in nice condition on most auction sites.

The rifle didnt get any action and didnt sell. Of course the seller had a "reserve price" on the gun which amounts to him saying:

"Bid if you want to , but I wont accept it til you reach my preset price - which you wont know til you cross it." Which isnt an auction at all, but a no negotiation sale.

When I asked him if he would consider an after auction sale, he said, "Sure the gun is 300$!! Buy it at that or it sits in my shop."
Is sits. Dust gathers.

Such logic iis based on teh "Greater Fool" principle, ie, there will always be a greater fool to come along an buy it. People can charge whatever they want - but you dont have to pay it!
