Detroit. um... Dogg.
I recently learned that Ishapore Enfield 2A1 .308 rifles are now C&R eligible. anyone know anyone who has them available for sale? I've been searching, but to no avail...

Erik, I've been looking for one of those myself. Gun shows and on-line auctions are pretty much the only game in town, from what I have seen. Good luck in your quest.

Has something strange, looks like a 2A or 2A1 mag but has a #4 front end.

that's a longbranch conversion. yes that's a legit No4Mk1 converted (most likely by a government armory) to fire 7.62NATO. not some frankenstein made of a 2A1 receiver and No4 parts.

these were converted for a number of different uses post-war, including for civilian use in matches equivilent to "service rifle" competition.

I've heard its got a thin barrel so its not suited to sustained firing... Wondering to what extent this is true?

I haven't noticed anything like that. Granted, I've only made mine warm, not smoking hot. But I seen no evidence of a "wandering zero" like the jungle carbines are reputed to have.

Hmmm. I picked mine up a year ago for $120 when a local gun store was closing its doors. Looks like I got a great deal...

I just passed on one for $175 at a show last weekend

According to the guy I bought my No1 from (after I bought it)
The conversions are problematic
The ones that were made for .308 used better steel.

In his words
"It was still an inferior design but the better metallurgy made up for the shortcoming"

the guy I was with questioned him on Enfields expensively and he seemed to know what he was talking about, as does my friend
