I recently purchased a remington 700 ADL in 7mm rem mag. I topped it with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3X9 40mm mounted in Hi Leupold Rings. I took it to the range today for the first time get it zeroed for upcoming deer season. After 15rounds I ran out of verticle adjustment and was still hitting 3.5 inches low at 100 yard. After each adjustment I would bump the escope to let the recticle settle and let the barrel cool for about 5 minutes between shots. Any idea on potential issues? I am at a loss ad help would be appreciated.

Also forgot to mention that I was shoting hornady 139 grain rounds

Did you check to make sure one scope ring isn't higher than the other?

That's honestly the only thing I can think of.

Check your scope rings and scope base tightness as well.

Lots of people tap their scopes to make sure the reticle moved into place. It's not like he is smacking it off a rock.

I would assume you mixed up the front and the back rings or mounts.

will try to find my micrometer and measure the rings. The Leupold rings have the twist in dove tail front and the windage adjust able rear. It is possible they were miss match in the package.

I'd check the bases and rings for 2 things - the height and a good seating of the scope in the rings. You might need to lap the rings to get a good fit. If it all looks good, you can either get new bases, or you can shim your rear base to raise it up and raise the point of impact. You can buy shims precut from Brownells (www.brownells.com) or you can make your own from any thin metal with some tin snips and a drill. If you use an aluminum soda can, you can cut that with scissors, shape it to your base (sand it to remove and burs or sharp edges) and jack that rear scope height to the point where you are within your scopes adjustment range.

I suggest the Burris Signature rings with the polymer inserts that will correct the problem you're having. I would measure and use a shorter ring as you don't need high rings for a 40 mm objective.

I originally had low mounts on it but had clearance issues with the bolt handle and the scope.

Scope Mount Issue

I do have a Remington 700 rifle with MEDIUM height Leupold Rings with a 40mm scope objective. Some scopes have more latitude in adjustment than others, but all should have adequate adjustment. High rings should never be necessary with 40mm objective scopes on Remington's. Bolt clears the scope nicely. 4.5-14x40mm Nikon Buckmasters seem custom-made to fit Model 700s. Start with new medium-height rings, since something seems wrong with your ring heights. cliffy

+1 on the Burris Signature zee rings. You'll throw rocks that the Leupold rings. And it doesn sound like you have a mis-matched set of bases.

I have a 700 VLS that I had to use shims to get the scope to zero. I had switched the rings, tried different rings, & tried 3 different scopes to no avail. Shims did the trick, available from Brownells.

Just for kicks try 175 grain bullets.

Or try a +20 moa base intended for long range shooting.

wow...

Lots of people tap their scopes to make sure the reticle moved into place.

If I owned a scope where I thought that was even a possible remedy to a problem, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I wouldn't even sell it, because I wouldn't put that kind of accuracy headache on any poor soul. It would get sent back to the factory or into the trash can.
So you "tap the reticle into place"...what exactly happens to said reticle when you touch off the first round of 7mm Mag?

Just took the rifle back to my LGS. They installed new rings and while bore siting ran out of verticle adjustment again. Will be sending the scope back to Bushnell. Anyone have any experience their customer service?

Same thing happens on virtually all of my big Burris scopes. It's not a problem or flaw with the scope. It's because of the high rings and mounting the scope so high above the bore and lack of adjustment range with the scope itself. That's one of the main reasons the Burris Signature rings exist. With the 1/8" clicks on their big scopes, you can run out of adjustment in a hurry.

Get lower rings if you can, if they're high enough to clear, or shim it.

I've had two scopes that would not work on particular rifles through the years, for the rifle/mount/scope combination, I ran out of adjustment.

Those scopes worked on other rifles, however with no prob.

Try the shims, or, maybe a vertical system like Talley.

Some scopes have more MOA adjustment than others.

Ring height alone cannot possibly be the issue unless you have mismatched rings. A diference in sight height of even a whole inch will make only a small difference in the required sight angle. The sight height above the bore is much greater on ARs and some other rifles, even compared to a large scope on a 700, and you don't run out of adjustment because of it.

Here are some numbers:
Sight height = 1.4" (that's scope center to bore center, the 1.4" happens to match one of my rifles)
Load = Fed Gold Match 300WM 190 gr.
Zero = 100 yards
Indicated sight angle = 3.4 MOA (~= angle between bore and line of sight)

Same setup with one variable changed;
Sight height = 2.4"
Indicated sight angle = 4.35 MOA

Notice the difference is less than 1 MOA (what, three or four clicks?)

You should have a ton of adjustment left over after zeroing at 100. Otherwise, you'd never be able to zero at long distance. No, you must have either a very defective scope, a stuck reticle, a very defective mount/ring combination, or a very poorly assembled rifle. No telling which. I did once buy a used rifle-- the scope rings had been tightened so far that the scope tube was deformed. It's in the land fill now.

problem solved. Took it back to the guns shop again put another 3200 on it and it ore sighted no problem with plenty of adjustment left. will see how it shoots on saturday. thanks for everyones input

I just picked up a Remington 700 ADL and will most likely put a 33mm scope on it, is it possible to put low rings on it or will I need medium height?
