Hello folks,
I recently got one of the surplus 228's from AIM. It was pretty heavily used but I figured I could use a project. Among the parts I preemptively installed was an SRT kit. That's when the fun started.
I noticed when dry-firing that the SRT kit had a distinct 2-stage feel to it. Not "crunchy", but a distinct "click", then the hammer would drop. I further noticed that if I stopped pulling the trigger at the first click, and released it, the hammer would go to decock. In effect, the trigger and decocking lever did the same thing. If I continued pulling the trigger, the hammer would drop normally. Hmmm.
First step took the SRT kit out and put the old sear and safety back. Problem goes away. SRT back in. Problem comes back. Take grips off and watch closely. The first click, is the trigger bar releasing the sear. Then the bar continues coming forward, pulls the safety lever tail, and the hammer drops. I'm not a Sig P series expert by any means but that seems weird.
Further trouble shooting and I find that the issue is related to the slide to frame fit. This 228 rattles a bit, and the slide is loose on the frame. I know that can happen, so I wasn't too worried, but here's the thing. If the slide is held up, away from the frame (like if you have a mag in and are shooting) this issue appears. If you hold the slide down (towards the frame) the issue goes away.
It seems as if with the slide off the frame even a little the safety lever can rotate up just enough to start interfering with the hammer drop. I'm not sure there, as I'm not 100% on what the safety lever actually does.
Videos of issue:
When I actually put some gauges in the slide, the number was .008" If the slide comes off the frame more then that the problem happens.
So my questions:
1. Anybody else ever seen this? If so how did you fix it?
2. Is my frame just trashed by the Israeli's?
3. Should I just give up on the SRT and go back to the original sear? (I really like SRT's)
Thanks in advance.
ETA: For what it's worth, when the SRT is working, it's a really nice trigger.
