If you don't know about the Valloton it is a Butch Valloton collaberation with Spyderco. Mine came in the mail today, after a week of holding my breath waiting for it.

Specs (from the Spyderco site)

Overall length: 8.687" (it's a big one!)
Blade length: 3.75"
Length closed: 5" (so big!)
Cutting edge: 3.563"
Blade material: CPM S30V
Blade thickness: .156"
Handle material: G-10
Weight: 6.2 oz.

On opening the package I knew it was going to be a big one because the box had some heft to it. Then I opened it and it's huge! It is also one of the most beautiful knives I've ever seen, probably THE most beautiful production knife. The fit and finish is superb. If you run your nails over the handle you can't even feel the change from G10 to steel except for a textural difference. The G10 is perfectly fit to the steel, no gaps, no surface variation.

This knife is a liner lock, and it is one beefy liner lock knife. I have no worries that this thing would ever malfuncion the way so many fear liner locks might. The action is smooth, opening one-handed easily via hole or stud and it locks open solidly with a resounding thunk. 0 blade play whatsoever. Nada. The blade has the Spyder hole and ambi thumb studs that double as stop pins to keep the blade from being able to open farther than intended during stress. The papers that came with the knife refer to the blade profile as a "modified tanto style." There is a slight tanto-esque grind towards the tip (see pics). They say hollow-grind at the cutting edge and convex at the tip. The blade is hefty and pretty thick. The tip isn't needle-sharp but it is sharp. You won't break it easily. Blade came sharp, but not razor sharp. Blade is centered nicely.

So the verdict. Initially, to say I am pleased with this knife would be a vast understatement. This knife was a back up plan when I ordered a Citadel Deimos from 3 different websites only to be notified after it was out of stock from all 3. I am glad the Deimos was out of stock. MSRP on the Valloton is $299, they seem to hover around the $180-200 range on most sites. I picked mine up on Ebay for $154 with free shipping. If you are looking for a big folder in this price range I would definately say look at the Valloton long and hard.

And now for the knife porn: ENJOY!

"Taiwan?"

Yep

The compound grind on the blade throws some folks and you'll have to give it special attention when you sharpen it, but that tip is designed to be rugged.

Butch does special mods on them in his shop so if you want an extra special version see him about it.

I got to handle the proto and some variants last year. I thought it was a hefty piece that would stand up to a lot of abuse.

I have several of Butch's and Rainey's knives, as well as protos and early production pieces Butch has shared with me. He's a great designer and knifemaker.

Well to date this is my most expensive folder and I tell you what, I think I picked the right one for my first "high end." It will definately not be my last from Spyderco. It may be made in Taiwan but I honestly don't care where it was made, the quality is absolutely top notch.

This one is a bit big for me for EDC, but that doesn't stop me from wanting one, just because. I like the looks a lot.

Congrats on the new toy, and thanks for the pics!

I thought it would be big for me too but it actually does pretty well. I'm a big guy and wear loose fitting jeans most of the time. Didn't make a noticable difference in my pocket from my Hissatsu.

Nice knife. Never seen one with a hole AND a thumb stud before. It also has 3 holes on the other end to allow you to switch ends with the pocket clip if you so desire.

BTW, no one actually pays MSRP for any knife or gun. It is just a published number to make you think you are getting a deal. Then again, this thing just screams quality so it would appear that you got a good deal indeed, enjoy!

Owen- Thanks, I think it's beautiful. The pocket clip has 4 way positioning so it can be left/right/tip up/tip down.

Hso- Hm, that would be interesting. I think I'll keep it as-is for the time being. I haven't been bitten by the auto bug, yet.

That's one solid-looking gent's folder. The hole+thumbstud is very different.

Then I opened it and it's huge!

Great photography! I love good pictures, even better when it's of a good blade.

Can you post up a picture of the knife with something common for scale? Dollar bill, cartridge, in your hand- just something so that the size of the knife is more apparent.

Application

You know, that may well be, but I'd be willing to bet I'd get some good use out of a blade like that in kitchen work and other general use.

I loves me some straight, plain cutting edge.

Yes I does.

:)

lol i guess thats the difference between us..if it were my picture it would be sitting above a picture of washington instead of franklin! :) MAKE IT RAIN UP IN HERE!!

nice knife all the same!
