VICTORY! SUPPORTERS OF SENSIBLE GUN LAWS WIN AT THE POLLS
Primaries in Maryland, New York, and Rhode Island Teach NRA a Lesson
Dear StoptheNRA Member,
Yesterday, in primaries across the country, we won big and were able to give the NRA a glimpse of what they’re up against this November.

Candidates who stood up for sensible gun laws won their races handily, and voters, like you, told them that preventing gun violence is an important election issue.
In an early test of national political strength for November elections, the NRA took a beating in many states:
In one of the most closely watched races in Maryland, incumbent State Senator John Giannetti was unseated by his Democratic primary opponent, former ambassador Jim Rosapepe, who pounded Giannetti for single-handedly killing the state's assault rifle ban in a prior session of the legislature. "I couldn't have won this race without the help of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence," Rosapepe said.
As our Maryland eActivists know, we have been focusing on Sen. Giannetti and his opposition to banning military-style assault weapons. Now he has learned the tough lesson that adopting the NRA's dangerous agenda is not only bad for public safety, it’s bad politics.
Also in Maryland, newcomer candidate Mike Lenett won out over established state legislators in a State Senate primary, by stressing his support from Sarah Brady. "The support of Sarah Brady and the Brady Campaign were a great help in my victory," said Lenett.
And the victories didn’t stop in Maryland. Rhode Island, too, gave us reason to celebrate. Long-time gun violence prevention friend, Republican U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee, won a hotly contested primary.
And in New York, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, who spent his career fighting against the NRA, swept away his opponent to win the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. The expected victories in November of Cuomo and Eliot Spitzer for Governor, will mean that the three most powerful positions in New York (along with Republican New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg) will be held by champions of sensible gun laws.
And yesterday's results follow the victory last month of Ed Perlmutter running in Colorado for the U.S. House. He differentiated himself from his principal primary opponent by stressing that he was a champion of gun violence prevention.
We are taking the fight to the federal, state, and local level … and winning.
All of this is leading up to what looks to be an exciting Election Day on November 7, when the gun issue will be in play in many states: for example, in Illinois and Wisconsin, incumbent Governors will be running for re-election on policies squarely on the side of sensible gun laws. Both candidates for the U.S. Senate in Ohio will be supporters of sensible gun laws. And key House races, in states like Pennsylvania, will feature passionate debates on the issue.
We have a lot more work to do … but the tide is starting to turn. The fight for sensible gun laws is prevailing. With your help, we will keep the momentum going and elect candidates this fall who support sensible gun laws and who pass legislation to save lives.
Yesterday's victories are just a start: let's keep the momentum going.
