Itching to Buy a Knife - Buck 119 Cocobolo

I own Buck knives in their 3 most recent “standard” steels. All function well for me in both ease of sharpening and edge retention. Bucks heat treat makes lesser steel into medium quality or better steel. I would not hesitate to grab a 420 HC Buck knife to head into the zombie apocalypse. I don’t believe they would stake their 100+ year reputation on a steel that did not preform.

They can stake a lot on their heat treat, which to me is the best in the world. I used them for my knives when Paul Bos was there and though he is long gone there just isn't any place better IMHO.

Does Buck do a lot of contract heat treating for other knife makers?

My first Buck was in '73. I got as a graduation present from my parents a pair of striped pants, and I was greatly offended by that so I took them back, and bought a Buck folder and got it engraved right there. I have no idea what model folder it was or what happened to it but that's the story.

What do you think? Ever think about a knife you used to have and want to buy it again?
I've got one with the black handle from probably 20 years ago. While I rarely use it, I have no desire to not have it. It's a classic sturdy design and useful when you just need a decent sized fixed blade. If I lost it, I'd probably buy a different fixed blade, but I wouldn't sell it.

In fact it's the first decent knife I ever bought. And the store that sold it to me did so illegally. They thought I was 18, I was not. Didn't know I needed to be 18 either. So it's a keeper!

I say go for it. $80? I'm guessing you won't even worry about it.

Must be a sign that that this thread appeared. Exactly one of the knives I had as a teen (and young hunter) that disappeared during a parent's move shortly after I went on active duty and I've thought about finally replacing. Now I have a hankering to track one down (mine had the stacked leather, but the wood looks pretty good to me too).

I need one to go with my ol' trusty 110.

That classic black handle knife with the black leather sheath is the one that disappeared. I have to recommend a direct replacement. They're great knives as issued. OOPSIE I missed that yours had stacked leather. I've never seen one of those!
