Guys I might catch flack for this but I was thinking about using a bondo type material to fill in the game sceen on my beatup 37 build. I was wondering if filling and sanding bondo would cause problems when I gunkote, duracote or other spray on finishes. I already removed 9" and the poly choke from the barrel leaving it 19" per your advice.

I would think that it could work. Degrease very carefully first, and accept that it sure won't be everyone's cup of tea...but if you want to...

It will perform well as a substrate under the coating, but I would wait for the Duracoat to cure WITHOUT heating it. Bondo gets very soft and deforms when it gets hot so keep it out of the oven.

Of course, if you want to shoot this thing "riot-gun" style until it smokes you might want to keep that in mind.

Maybe use Acra-Glass or other bedding material instead.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. I figured the bondo might have issues with heat. The plan is to make it more like a Ithaca stakeout than the 37 LW field gun it is. My preference would have been to fully restore the gun as a bird gun but a high gloss blueing job around here is 200-300, new wood 150, and to remove the poly choke it would be cheaper to find a new barrel.

The new plan is to smooth out the engraving, Choate pistol grip stock, Duracoat or some type of gunkote. Side saddle and if I can find some type of soder on ghost rings.

I am a little worried about some of the reading about restocking the gun. It is an older model and I am not sure if the choate stock will fit.

How old?

The older versions with the different stock attachment tang on the trigger group won't work, but you can always swap out your trigger group for one of the later ones that will work. Receiver attachment shape has always been the same, from the very beginning.

I have an Ithaca 37 from 1953 (thanks Talon!) and I was wondering if this would be too old for the Choate stock to fit?

If so, does anybody know of any replacement stock for this gun?

Thanks

See my reply to your PM for more info.

EDIT:

Oh, and apparently, I already answered the same question when it was posted in this very thread a few months ago:

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

As for already having answered the question, I only have one 37 so "different stock attachment tang" really didn't do me any good, I had nothing to compare mine to. I hope that doesn't sound rude, as it is not meant in that way at all. I just needed clarification on how to distinguish between the two tangs.

The tang on mine is about an inch long, so it's looking like I'll be ordering the Choate stock soon.

For those reading this, the older tang is about 2" long and the newer style is about 1" long. The Choate stock will fit the newer and shorter tang only.

Thanks again Black Talon!
