Ithaca Mod 37 HD shotgun (DS Police Special)

I saw a Ithaca model 37 today in a home defense configuration, pistol grip rear and synthetic standard forearm, looked like it was nickel or chrome plated. What would a model 37 go for roughly? I think they were asking $250. Looked to be in decent shape, a few nicks at the muzzle, but nothing major from what I could tell.

I'd probably take the pistol grip off and try to find a regular stock for it.

Most decent newer 37's are around that price. I dont know if Id pay for one that was "pimped" out like that. Then again dad always taught me to be cheap and talk them down as much as possible. I havent seen too many 37's for much over 300 usualy, some cheap as 175 that were pretty rough all around. so if its run of the mill...probaly pretty good.

At that a perfect gun for any lefty needing a HD gun.

I"m wronghanded, so the Ithacas have always kind of intrigued me.

Did they ever make a chromed or nickel HD gun? It has an 18" barrel, no choke tubes. Wondering if it was sawed down, or if it may have came that way. Might have to go and take a closer look tomorrow...

37s are VERY good pumpguns. The only disadvantage I can name is a complicated mechanism harder to assemble/disassemble than the 870. They run a little lighter, which can be good or bad.

Worth the asking price, even with that PG.

ithaca's

I love my 37, but it's a standard stock. The stock length, reach, and pointability are awesome. I am much more comfortable with it then the Winchester 1300 and Mossberg 500 I used to own. I don't care for pistol grip shotguns.

In Los Angeles, I see 37's that are rough but usable for about $225 ~ $250. Very nice clean ones are in the $300's. I bought a older "new" DSPS for $400 earlier this year, but I wanted one very badly and getting anything into California is a PITA. FFL's want so much for transfers these days it's almost not worth shipping anything. Last time I was quoted a price to receive a long gun, it was $75 or 10% of the sale price, whichever is higher!

I love my 37, a John Browning design. If it's an 18" barrel it's probably aftermarket or sawed down, because the shortest factory barrel I've seen is 20".

Gunsnrovers,

Those prices the FFLs are charging are robbery! $75 or 10%, whichever is higher??? Good grief!

A year and a half ago, when I was still in Kalifornicate, a transfer on my 870 Police went for $30 in the SF bay area...check your local big 5 sports or other sporting goods place with FFL and see how much they would charge...

Gunsrovers,

If you're ordering a gun, check GunBroker or Auction Arms for a list of FFL dealers in your area who will take delivery.

Some of them may be VERY reasonable.

The punitative fees, ($75 is a punitative fee) is probably done because they want you to buy something directly from them, where their profit margin increases.

The process certainly doesn't cost $75.

you're right

It is punitive. I've been to Kings Gun Works, Rettings, Red Star, and LA Guns (though not in the last few months). All were very high in terms of transfer fees.

When I was in San Diego, I had a few shops that were very reasonable. Haven't found any up here in Los Angeles.

D.S. Police Special

turns out it was a DS Police Special, Ithaca model 37 lightweight. Still can' really tell if it's chrome/nickel or stainless, I thought the tag said $245, but it was $295, talked em down to $275 and I ended up adopting it:D

This is resurrecting an old thread

Not for sale right now, sorry.

On a side note, anyone know where I can get a 20" smoothbore barrel? I picked up a M37 featherweight for $10 in nice shape, receiver bluing is a bit purple, barrel looks darn near new, but it's 30", and I'd hate to take a hacksaw to it. I"m just not much for long shotties :scrutiny:

I'd have bought it, I rarely see factory nickel Ithaca 37's and since I want a marinecote or nickel plated shotgun of some sort as well as a Ithaca, that would kill 2 birds with one stone and would be especially welcome as I am officially out of safe space for any more long guns!

Check with Les Hovencamp at Diamond Gunsmithing in Ithaca, N.Y., or keep an eye on ebay. Also Les has other resources for procurring Ithaca Mod 37 barrels. Remember that for older Ithaca Mod 37's with serial numbers under 855,000 they must be fitted by a competent gunsmith.

wintermute76: If your interested in selling that 30" barrel I could maybe take it off your hands if it's: 2 3/4" 12ga. (choke unimportant), serial no. less than 855,000. IM me if interested. Thanks.

Moonclip, I picked her up the day after I posted the thread, it's a sweetie, even found a left hand safety for it :)

Wags, Let me check on what the serial is and I'll get back to you. Thanks for the info :)

I unfortunately missed a standard finish Ithaca 37 riot gun in summer of 2004 for the same price. I have fond memories of slamfiring a friends Ithaca so much(he didn't know of the feature until I showed him) that it had to go in to the gunsmith eventually!

The best gun deal I ever did probably was a very clean circa early 1950's 16 gauge Ithaca 37 in 16 ga I got in 1999 for $60! I stupidly traded it for a Plainfield m1 carbine.

Neat guns especially for lefties, now get a Walther p1 or P38 as the brass ejects the wrong way, to the left!

There's a place in Virginia MN that has a Ithaca 16 ga in really nice shape, offhand I"d say easy 90% + , think they're asking $500. I"m almost tempted.

Funny you should say that, picked up a P1 about a month ago :D

Thats way too high for a 90%+ Mod 37 16ga.. A 95%+ are going for around $300-$350 if you search around. For $500 I'd wait and see what the new Ithaca Gun USA, LLC prices are for a new one once they start production and hit the market. I saw on another shotgun webpage that some folks have contacted the new company and it seems 16ga are in high demand already! I own a late 40's Mod 37R 16ga and it's my favorite all around pump gun.
