I have a friend with an Ithica 37 Featherweight.

It's having problems extracting fired shells, and inspection shows that the hook on the extractor is worn/bent.

A new extractor was found at Numrich, and after you tubing at it for a while we finally got the bolt out of the shotgun.

So far, the extractor has resisted being extracted. By that, I mean we can't get it out of the bolt. It looks like it's just held in by a spring, but we haven't figured out how to make the spring let go.

Has anybody messed with this before? Got any suggestions?

Any help at all is appreciated.

"Frank",

I've had to do this on one of my M37s a couple of years ago.

First, make sure that you have a manual; if you had trouble getting the bolt out, then I assume that you don't have one:

On my gun, I replaced several small parts, including the firing pin and extractors. The *only* part with which I had a difficulty was the small (top) extractor.

While the large one is held by a pin, the small one has to be "wiggled" out after (IIRC) partially compressing the spring. Sorry, but it was long enough ago that I've forgotten the specifics.

However, I *do* remember that it was the *only* part that I found difficult to replace. :(

Best of luck.

Regards,

Mark.

To remove the top extractor, use a very small screwdriver and push back on the top extractor cap (part no. 12), the part is very hard to see since only the very tip can be seen.

When holding the cap back the extractor can be lifted out from the hole in the bolt.
If you go to the Ithaca web site they have a exploded parts diagram showing all the parts.
Also any other parts that maybe needed can be supplied by Ithaca.

Just call Zak (service mgr.) at Ithaca 419-294-4113.

All right!

Thanks for the service manual. I thought it was going to be some variation of pushing the spring back, but hadn't considered doing it in a vise with vice grips.

Will give that a shot.

THANKS!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a gun smith to work on a Ithaca Model 37.

Just some good tools and common sense.

Well, we put it in the vice and herked on it a little... and it came right out.

Installing the new one was gravy. It snapped right in.

Now to see if that solved the problem. The new extractor has a much nicer "hook" to it, and it looks like an improvement to me.

Thanks, guys! Appreciate the help.
