Here's my scaled down "precision/sniper" rifle. I started putting it together after looking at Remington 700 SPS Tactical and deciding that I didn't have the space (or money) to really do a .308 justice as far as set up, range, and shooting time/volume. This MKII was standing next to the Remington in the rack and looked like it's little brother and it got me to thinking about whether or not a .22lr could replicate a .308 as far as trajectory, windage, etc. and at what distances. As the idea took shape I thought it could be fun to use action figures and small silhouettes as targets, sort of a back yard sniping game. So I had the question of whether I could scale down targets to give me an equivelant sight picture as well.

Long story short, I figured the max range for a .308 at 1000yds and used a 6' silhouette for a target at that range. Assuming the max range for a .22lr to be 150-200yds it works out that a 1/6 scale target (1' tall) gives me the same sight picture at 167yds as a 6' target does at 1000yds using the same magnification. Not only that but the bullet drop and windage of the .308 and .22lr are surpisingly close (at scale) at those ranges, within 10%.

So, I bought the MKII and set about trying to make it more accurate and shootable as well as giving it a more appropriate appearance. It is in a Sharp Shooter Supply MTR stock that I gave a simple finish to by rubbing it down with several coats of Howard's Feed-N-Wax. I didn't want a glossy finish and this stuff gave it a soft, satin kind of appearance while bring out the grain nicely. The stock has been pillar bedded and the barrel free floated from the front of the receiver forward, it has a Harris bipod and the scope is a Mueller APV. The barrel has been recrowned with a deep dish 11 deg crown and the barrel and action have been parkerized. Prior to having any of the work done I was consistently getting dime to nickel size 5 shot groups at 50yds with several different kinds of ammo. The gunsmith got several 10 shot groups under 1" at 100yds using aquilla subsonic. I just got it back the other day and the weather here in Maine has been so cold and snowy I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but it looks great!
Anyway, just thought I'd share my rifle's story and some pics, so here they are-

Sharp looking rifle, I can see the resemblance. I own a Rem700 SPS Tactical in .308, home come you didn't get the SPS Tac in .223? Ah yes, POST THOSE GROUPS!

Looks good, Im looking into getting an accurate .22 myself. Either a CZ or a used Anshutz. I already have a MkII that I like a lot. I use mine as a iron sights gun though.
