Well, I finally got to stretch the AR-50's legs at 1000yds at the Thunder Valley Rifle Club range in OH. Learned a lot and met a lot of great people. Great day at the range even with temps in the mid 40's and a 20+mph wind playing hell with things.

Biggest thing I learned is a bullet travelling 1000yds WILL be moved around by the wind...a LOT! Even the mighty 50 BMG with A-Max bullets. Time of flight is well over 1 full second to impact and this was amusing. THUMP, recover from the recoil, re-aquire the sight picture in the scope, move rifle over to my target.....then SPLASH! There is the impact! First round I was dismayed thinking that I will never get dialed in because I didn't see the impact....I just had to wait a bit and there it was!

Before the targets came out, most of us didn't know if we would even be rewarded with holes in our record targets. Happily, I HAD HOLES!!
But, I lost a shot on my second record target so was DQ'd. Oh well, chalk it up to learning experience and I'll do better next time.

The group in the picture is 4 shots into 8.25" around the 12:00 9 ring with a lousey, flinch flyer down at 8:00 in the 7ring blowing it up to 18.25". The rifle is obviously able to shoot better than the owner but he is willing and going to get better.

It was a great experience and one that I would recommend to all. Oh, the range has 1 MILE targets on the next hillside to the right of the 1000yd berm. And, a 600yd berm for the smaller calibers.

WOW looks like you had a Ball. do you reload for your AR-50?? are you a member of the FCSA?? I am going to join, I only hear good things about the FCSA, especialy now since I met Larry from state arms, and ordered a new gun from him. I am excited!

Almost a twenty-inch group at a mere one-thousand yards? Ya, you do need practice...

[/sarcasm]

Honestly, that's pretty sweet. Especially with the significant wind factor that you describe.

I've always wondered about 1000yrd targets. I can barely see the target at 200yrds. with iron sites. You are using a scope right?

just think... MOA accuracy at that range is a 10" group!!!
So for your first 1K shoot, that was damn good! Congrats!:D

I was a FCSA member for a couple of years but let it expire last year. As soon as I got home from the shoot, I went online and signed up again. Yes, bitten hard by the 1000yd bug!

It would be really difficult to shoot that far with iron sights so everyone has magnification for sure. I am using an inexpensive 40X Tasco Custom Shop Target Mildot right now and, after looking through some of the Nightforce scopes that were there have decided to start saving my pennies for better glass. Actually, I found 24X to be fine for the targets and possibly the best magnification level for my scope. The eye relief seems to decrease with additional power and it is easier to get a picture at the lower levels than at max magnification. To see at 40X requires your eye to be EXACTLY in the right place with little room for error. On the shot, it took too long to get back in focus to make 40X practical for me.

Ammo is best loaded by yourself unless you are willing to pay a bunch for your fun. One fellow was shooting some moly-coated stuff that he said cost almost $5 per round!! Ouch!

I was shooting virgin surplus Lake City 82 & 83 with surplus IMR 5010 under the Hornady 750grn A-Max bullets. Total loaded cost about $1.75 for the target rounds not counting the brass which is re-usable many times. Not too bad.

The 50 Caliber Club is a really nice one to belong to. Show up at the range with ANY 50 and you are embraced as a friend and compadre by all. Everytime. So far, I have not met a single (insert derogatary term) at a 50 shoot. Most that gravitate to the 50's are serious nutjo.....enthusiasts!

And, to be online with 10+ 50's shooting at the same time.....under a roof which seems to channel and magnify the blast from the muzzlebrakes.....priceless! Like the 4th of July every time.

Just thought I should point out to some of the folks here, that you don't need a .50BMG to compete at 1,000 yards. Us F Class folks do it all the time with calibers such as 6.5 Swede, .308 Win, and the venerable .30-06. Wind? Yeah, sucks big time.

Once you connect with a target 1K yards away, you are never really same ever again.

"But, I lost a shot on my second record target so was DQ'd."

Bob, I don't understand. You mis-read the wind, missed the target completely, and then dq'd for safety reasons? Is that correct?

We will soon be enforcing a rule like that at my 600 yrd range - we can't afford to have rounds go over the berm.

Dave

Dave P,
I can't say exactly the sequence of the shots but here is the second target. Seems that I was on OK for two shots then two more high and it is assumed that the missing shot went over the top. Probably not by much, so safety wasn't compromised at all. Best I can figure is that the wind came up and I should have taken my time and waited for it to die down a bit.

But, also remember that I had NO idea of where the bullets were striking the target....if at all. Only when presented with both targets did I see the results of my shooting. Anxious moments waiting for the scoring to be finished, for sure!

The DQ came in scoring. Unless you have all 10 shots on the paper, you do not get a final score and are eliminated from any consideration of ranking.

Today when I heard of the C5-A crash at Dover I thought about that missing round. Maybe it DID circle the Earth for a couple of days until it found that unfortunate aircraft to shoot down. These darn 50's might be more dangerous than I thought!!

hillbilly...

I have yet to take my 300WSM to the 1000-yard mark, but I did shoot a few times at the 600-yard gong last Sunday morning. It was the longest shot I have ever attempted. I missed-- the shot went high and kicked up the dust behind the gong but it was a different feeling, like you said. I can't wait to get out there next Sunday morning and try again.

That is a cool kick ass range!!! I gotta get me one of those. Maybe I could set some benches on Mt. Eisonhower and put the targets up on Wildcat which is on the other side of Rt. 16!:D
